That night, Lilly and I cabbed up to Donna’s. I met her two 22-year-old dogs, and she showed me the machine, which was encased in a small suitcase on wheels. She explained that the machine is really a device for human healing, but that every time she turned it on to treat a human, her dogs would throw themselves against the machine. She surmised that the dogs wanted the treatment, so she was giving them treatments every few days. She attributed their long life and health to the machine.
I held Lilly on my lap as Donna treated us with the machine. After 15 minutes, I put Lilly on the floor. And something quite miraculous happened. Lilly walked around the apartment. She went from not moving, having to be carried everywhere, even outside to pee, to being curious enough, and with enough energy, to walk around and explore her surroundings. (Thank you, Donna.)
That night, I also learned about radiation hormesis, and started both Lilly and myself on a program involving frequent exposure to low-level radiation from stones. But that is another story, and one that I have told previously in both book and documentary form. Back to the story at hand…
Donna explained that the machine she had used on us was a pulsed magnetic machine. The next day, I bought my first PEMF device.
That was eight years ago, and I have acquired much experience using the machine, not only on Lilly and myself, but on many hundreds of La Casa clients.

PEMF is used in most cancer clinics throughout Europe. It is, in fact, considered standard-of-care as a cancer treatment in Europe, and PEMF devices are certified as medical devices according to the Medical Device Directive. It has been shown to destroy cancer cells, to re-differentiate unhealthy and inflamed cells, to activate DNA repair, and to cause apoptosis (cellular suicide) in cancer and inflamed cells.
One study was done with 220 M.D.s in European countries from 1999-2002. Over 1,000 patients were followed after receiving PEMF. Results showed large-scale improvement in arthritis, depression, diabetes type II, edema, fibromyalgia, fractures, general pain, headaches (both migraine and non-migraine), heart disease, hypertension, immune system disorders, incontinence and bladder problems, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, rheumatism, sleep disorders, spinal column diseases, stomach disorders, strokes, tennis elbow, tinnitus, fatigue, ulcers, wound healing.
PEMF devices now have US FDA approval as a medical instrument in the healing of a variety of conditions (though, clearly, not nearly as many afflictions as showed improvement in the European study, and where it is an essential tool in most clinics and holistic cancer facilities) including:
• Non-union bone fractures
• Muscle stimulation
• Urinary incontinence
• Depression and anxiety
• Brain cancer
According to William Pawluk, MD: “Disruption of electromagnetic energy in cells causes impaired cell metabolism. This is the final common pathway of disease. If cells are not healthy, the body is not healthy.” Our bodies use magnetic fields to generate cellular energy. This increased energy is needed to help our bodies both maintain health as well as heal and regain balance.
PEMF therapy recharges the body’s 70 trillion cells. The machine creates an electric spark that is comparable to a lightning bolt. It is a hard strike that travels right to the cell. This massive amount of energy stimulates the cell, causing all the events that we want to happen in the cell.
A healthy cell is round with a thick border called the membrane. Inside the cell is an ATP factory. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a nucleoside triphosphate used in cells, and is seen as the "molecular unit of currency" of intracellular energy transfer. It transports chemical energy within cells. All nutrients are absorbed through the membrane receptors, and all toxins leave the cell through the same membrane. But when there is an accumulation of too many toxins (which is inevitable in modern life), the membrane gets blocked. The cell then can’t take in nutrients and can’t let go of toxins. The cells are actually stuck together, and poison themselves. They deflate, and they can’t breathe properly (yes, even our cells breathe, and it was on this issue that Otto Warburg won one of his Nobel Prizes—the discovery that cancer cells lack the ability to respirate). The clumped-together cells are easily observed through a Dark Field microscope.
Cancer cells specifically grow so fast that the cell membranes become brittle. The cells don’t have enough time to become flexible, soft, well-developed cells.
The PEMF has been described (by Dr. Rao at the Paracelsus Klinik in Switzerland) as a “negative ion shooter.” Pathogenic cells have a positive charge. Healthy cells are negative in their charge. If we can get negative ions into the body on a cellular level, we can create healthy cells. The PEMF shoots massive amounts of negative ions right into the cell structure, and the cells then pump and plump back up, become round again and well-functioning.
Or, they do the opposite. They die. PEMF also facilitates self-destroying processes inside the cell that help the overall survival of the cell. (Call them “martyr cells.” The cells engage in autophagy, or “self-eating” which helps the cell get rid of harmful toxins and metals; or alternatively, they are finally able to create the process of apoptosis—cellular suicides—which cancer cells adamantly refuse to do, left to their own devices). These cell deaths are essential ways of ridding the body of waste, helping the body to remain healthy and vital. PEMF induces both of these processes within the cell structure.
PEMF has the same cellular effects as physical exercise in that it increases the formation of cellular openings called “pores” (like in your skin) within the outer cell membrane, thereby facilitating the transfer of oxygen to the inside of the cell. The pores created by PEMF, which allow more inflow of oxygen and electrons to the cell, lead to more nutrient uptake by the cell, hence more energy production.
The History of PEMF:
Claims of magnetic healing can be traced back more than 4000 years. According to the Yellow Emperor’s Canon in Internal Medicine, magnetic stones were applied to pressure points on the body to relieve pain.
PEMF is a specific type of electromagnetic therapy in which small electrical currents are intermittently applied to the body.
Jumping ahead a few millennia, on April 12, 1961: Russian Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Yet, for his one hour and 48 minutes of making a single cycle around the earth, the man paid heavily. He came back in near-critical condition, in spite of having had sufficient water, food and oxygen.
We know that we can suspend the intense pulling down effects of gravity for some time; we do it (albeit it, only partially) when we swim. But the question of what caused Gagarin's physical debilitation had to be answered before another flight was scheduled. Within short order, the puzzle was solved.
It was Gagarin's separation from the natural pulsed magnetic energy of the earth that was the problem. We now know that all living cells need exposure to pulsed magnetic fields. The friction and movement of the various parts of the inner earth create a continuous and strong pulsating magnetic field emanating from the bowels of our earth, and surrounding it as well. Life could not have developed originally on earth without this energy, and for each of us to continue to live, we must be exposed to this energy. We are energy bodies, and without this exposure for even short periods of time, the effects on the body are depression, bone loss, muscle degeneration, decreased metabolism, impaired perception/disorientation. Within hours of non-exposure, normal healthy cells die. Since Gagarin's initial space flight, all space-suits and space-stations are equipped with pulsed magnetic devices.
The way in which the therapeutic value of pulsed magnetic was first discovered, long before space-travel, has an interesting back-story. It begins when the telegraph copper cable was being laid in the ocean between London to NY. When there was a break in the cable, the technicians had to determine exactly where the break was. After all, they couldn’t just send a diver randomly down into the depths of the ocean, searching the vast water with a flashlight. Instead, they sent a high voltage pulse of electricity through the cable. Wherever the electric charge hit a break in the cable, a spark gap would be created which made a noise. Acoustical equipment on a ship nearby could hear the sound. The men were then able to send a diver down to the exact spot where the noise was coming from. Technicians on land would then shut off the electricity, and the diver would fix the break in the cable. But the men who were on land feeding the pulse through the cable with the high voltage machine noticed an interesting phenomenon: various pains that they had been suffering from disappeared.
The Current State of Affairs:
Today, we are all magnetically-deficient. We no longer absorb the pure and life-sustaining magnetic energy of Earth herself because we don’t have enough direct contact with her (from living in hi-rise apartments, to walking on concrete). As well, the electro-magnetic chaos of cell phones, microwaves, WiFi and internet waves contributes to our deficiency. Finally, the Earth’s magnetic field is not fixed in position or strength. In the last hundred years, it has weakened, on average, by about 6 percent. In the last thousand years, it has fallen nearly 30 percent. Scientists have determined that 4000 years ago, Earth's magnetic field was 5.0 gauss. Today it's 0.5 gauss—a drop of 90%.
The usefulness of PEMF has been shown in clinical usage to be systemic to all functions of the body. The treatment works by addressing the underlying cause of all disease: stagnation at the cellular level. PEMF improves cellular metabolism through encouraging a flow and release of cellular constipation. Bodily traffic jams are restored to an even flow of orderly transport of oxygen and nutrients to the whole system. Thus, PEMF both detoxifies as well as promotes better absorption of nutrients.
