Poison Ivy and Nut Butters

Musings from 20th Street

Poison Ivy

When I was working with Ruth Sackmans's organization, the Foundation for Advancement of Cancer Therapies (FACT), I used to speak at their conference every year. I would end my talks with a refrain that was both shocking and funny. I would tell people that if they wanted to avoid getting cancer, or get better if they had cancer, they should jump into a patch of poison ivy. I wasn't entirely serious. But I was making a point. I was making a point about dosage even before I had heard of the hormesis effect (which I wrote a book about a few years ago). The point was that a small jolt or stimulating agent creates a reaction in the body that then activates the body to respond. And that reaction can jumpstart an immune response, which is a good thing.

I started writing this Musings two weeks ago. Poison ivy was on my mind because it is ubiquitous where I live in NJ. The irony is that a few days after I had finished writing this material, I had a terrible bout with poison ivy -- all over my body. Ugh. it was really hideous: blistery, pus-y, itchy, etc.

So, here is what I know about poison ivy.

If you want to get rid of the ubiquitous plant that practically takes over wherever it grows, make note: burning it is NOT a good idea. Burning poison ivy will cause the oil in it, urushiol, to be released into the air. This can then travel to your nasal passages, throat and lungs, and can cause difficulty in breathing. If this occurs, it’s important to seek medical attention quickly. Rather than burning the plant, a salt and vinegar solution, as recommended by Farmer’s Almanac, will do the trick.

Here is both the scientific information about what poison ivy is, and the various treatments for it.

The rash is caused by an allergic reaction to the urushiol oil that is found not only in poison ivy, but poison oak, and poisonous sumac, as well. The best remedy for it if you come into contact with it is to wash it off within an hour. Soap and water is recommended, but rubbing alcohol or vodka are both effective solvents for urushiol.

If you don’t know that you have come into contact with it (and, as probably happened with me, you can get exposed to the oil by petting your dog who has romped through the leaves), then it is likely that you will experience the following symptoms:

• Redness
• Itching
• Swelling
• Blisters

This is what you will want to do:

• plaster your skin with either clay or charcoal, or a combination of the two. Wrap in saran wrap to both keep it warm, and to keep it off your clothes; leave on for at least an hour;
• rinse with apple cider vinegar, isopropyl alcohol/vodka, or calendula tincture infused with essential oils;
• plaster with calendula powder;
• keep repeating those steps until the oozing stage is over;
• soothe with any combination of the following: lavender; aloe vera; calendula salve; calendula oil; plantain leaves; jewel weed.

I was doing all those procedures. But it wasn't going away fast enough. So, I upped the ante. I added a few more things. First, I called my friend and healing practitioner, a master homeopath, Dr. Lawrence Caprio, and asked for his advice. He told me to use Rhos Tox 30 c (homeopathic remedy). He also told me that I wouldn't be having the intense reaction I was having without being too acidic. He said to alkalize, alkalize, alkalize. So I got out my trusty bicarbinate powder, Get Off Your Acid, created by my chiropractor friend, Daryl Gioffre. And I, indeed, alkalized, alkalized, alkalized.

That was the key that made it go away. Two days later, I was blister-free. My affected skin started peeling off, and nice new skin is now visible where only blisters were before.

But I wasn't satisfied. I wanted to know why I would be so acidic on my vegan diet. I had one more piece of the puzzle to put into the mix of understanding. I remembered the last time I assessed my VOLTAGE on my BioModulator (created by Jerry Tennant, who I have written about in the past), I had tested very low -- actually scarily low. I knew that with low voltage, the body doesn't retain anything good: it can't hold on sufficiently to oxygen, even with deep breathing or a hyperbaric chamber; it can't retain healing frequencies.

With low voltage, all attempts to heal will be only temporary. I decided I needed to significantly increase my voltage. I started wearing the BioModulator during the day, and made sure that I hugged "my" tree when I was at my home in New Jersey, and took off my shoes and stood on moss under the tree. And hugged my dog even more than usual. If you don't understand how all those activities increased my voltage, go to the Musings where I have written about these things in the past.

In the meantime, stay alkaline, and love the NYC trees. They clean our air, and bring us back to the energy we need to have in our bodies.

Nut Butters

There is no relationship between nut butters and poison ivy. There is only that they are both on my mind at this moment, for different reasons.

I recently re-read some of Norman Walker’s books. The following is an excerpt from his book, “The Vegetarian Guide to Diet and Salad”:

“Nuts which have been cooked, roasted, or otherwise subjected to excessive heat, are harmful on account of the change which takes place in the fat under these conditions. The reaction on the liver and gall bladder is then detrimental and may sooner or later interfere with the complete and proper function of these organs.
“Nut butters are sometimes more readily digested than the nuts themselves provided that neither the nuts nor the butters have been subjected to heat.”

Norman Walker died in 1985. That year, I was already 15 years into studying and practicing holistic health. I had been working with Ruth at FACT, the Foundation for Advancement of Cancer Therapies, for all of those years. Legend, as I heard it back then, was that Walker was around 120 (though we variously heard 113 and 119), and still vigorously romping around the hills of Arizona the day before he died. That information was used then as a good testament to the raw juice regimen that Walker promoted and followed. Had I started my blog Make It To 120 at that point, I surely would have interviewed him, along with some of the other luminaries I have interviewed about their personal journeys of aging (including the late great Burton Goldberg, my “kissing cousin” and friend.

Walker made many valuable contributions to our understanding of what creates health, and what produces ill health. But, he did not live to 120. According to Wikipedia, he lived to only the ripe young age of 99.

Of the many contributions to health that Walker made, one of the most important was that he understood the fragility of oils, and the dangers of heated oils. One of the reasons why nuts taste so good, and why they are healthy, is because of the large amount of oils (fats) in them. Heating nuts has become a health issue in the last several years because of the increasing popularity of nut butters and nut milks. I have written about the specific problem of almonds in the past. To read my past Musings on this subject, click HERE.

Fans of dehydration need to take note here in regard to dehydrated nuts and seeds. They are delicious, and can be flavored exotically and wonderfully. Generally dehydrators are set at the temperature just below where enzymes are destroyed: 115 degrees. But enzymes are not oils, and some oils are degraded at an even lower temperature. Bernard Jensen, the healing practitioner who treated my mother for her terminal cancer (and directed her to the regimen that cured her), was a great fan of nut butters, and maintained that they are easier to digest than the nuts themselves. (BTW, Jensen lived to the ripe young age of 93, and that was after suffering from injuries sustained in a car accident, and sustaining further injury after being dropped from the gurney while at the hospital.) (I know this personal information about him because we had become friends when he was treating my mother, and I am old enough to have lived through his old age with him—knowing him, respecting him, and even loving him. My mother and I traveled every six months for many years to his ranch in Escondido.) As Jensen said, nut butters are a good (and delicious) way of getting in healthy fats. But grinding the nuts into butter does raise the temperature, and the temperature is one of the factors that determine whether the food is good for the body, or toxic. If you want to partake of nut butters, make sure they are processed at a low temperature.

Book Your Room at La Casa de Vida,
Puerto Rico Now!

Our stunning La Casa de Vida, in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, is finally getting back on its feet again after terrible storms.

Once again, the gorgeous cottage on the property is available to rent through Airbnb, and our visitors, across the board, have been raving about their experience there.

“We loved this place! So lush and beautiful. You feel like you're in your own private rainforest. The views are fabulous. We were there during the remnants of a tropical storm but that really just made this place even better. The flora is gorgeous. We marveled at all the things we know as 'houseplants' growing wild and big. Jill grows fruits and vegetables all over the property. You'll even find little tomato vines tucked away in odd corners. The frogs at night (and other weird noises we couldn't identify) created a beautiful symphony. The little house was wonderful and charming with the owner's art on the walls (she's talented too). We'd love to visit this place again and we never do the same thing twice. A few notes -- if you are freaked out by insects and lizards it's not for you. Go to the Marriott.”

An Update on Hydrogen

I talked about the ionic foot baths in a recent Musings. I offered the evidence that it is yet another way for the delivery of hydrogen. Here are yet even more of the beneficial effects as elucidated by Dietrich Klinghardt:

· Ionic foot baths can increase aluminum excretion by up to 600%.

· The highest excretion of metals via the urine is on the third day after the foot bath session.

· An ionic foot bath is one of the most important survival tools of our time.

· A squirt of cilantro orally before the foot bath is like a foot bath on steroids. (Editor note: Discuss cilantro with your doctor prior to use as it can be a strong metal mobilizer; cilantro is not appropriate if there are still metals in the mouth.)

FLOWER POWER

History of Eating Flowers:
Flowers have been included in food as far back as we have records. Ancient Greek, Roman and Chinese herbalists recorded medicinal and culinary uses for flowers. The early Incas, Aztecs and Hindus included flowers in their most important rituals. Nearly every early civilization recognized calendula, whose petals were served as food and piled on altars. Information also is available on the use of edible flowers from the medieval and Victorian periods.

Historical Names:
The Romans recognized calendula blooming on the first day of the month, so they named it accordingly. The valued petals of saffron (Crocus Sativus) were preserved for medicinal uses, so calendula was used to infuse a similar golden color in cooked dishes. Calendula was commonly referred to as "pot marigold" by medieval monks who used it in their cooking pots. The monks also named the wild pansy (Viola Tricolor). These little purple and yellow flowers are the parents of the larger modern hybrid pansy. Bee balm (Monarda Didyma) is very popular with bees but also was used as a poultice for bee stings. Early carnations were called "Pinks" by the Victorians. The species were pink in color but they also had ruffled petals that looked as if they were cut with pinking shears.

Identification:
There are similarities among edible flowers that likely helped our ancestors decide on their safety. The majority of edible flowers are also butterfly staples, as the larvae eat the petals as a major food source. If they had contained dangerous compounds, the larvae would have likely succumbed. Our ancestors also knew that the flowers of culinary herbs like sage, lavender and oregano contained lower levels of the same constituents as the foliage. Their brave experimentation allows us to eat these edible flowers today without concern. Unfortunately, the poisons present in such flowers as monkshood (Aconite) were discovered in the same manner.

Uses
Historically, flower petals were eaten most often fresh in salads or as garnishes. The petals of carnation, bee balm, borage, sage, violet, nasturtium, day lily and calendula were commonly eaten. They were thought to be cleansing for the body as well as attractive. It was common to dry the petals and include them in tea blends. Popular tea flowers were hibiscus, rose, jasmine and bee balm.
  • Bee balm was used as a tea substitute when black tea became unavailable during the Boston Tea Party in 1773.
  • To preserve violets, medieval monks would make a sweet syrup from the petals.
  • The Victorians, who associated edible flowers with elegance, candied the flowers of violet and borage to decorate cakes and desserts.
  • In China still today day lilies are used in foods, and are often stuffed and also used as snacks with tea. We all have tasted Jasmine Tea. You often find them in Sweet & Sour soups and dishes.
  • The Indians use calendula to spread on top of rice, and marigold is the poor man's saffron. They also use Rose petals and Rose Water for firey personalities and to cool down an over-acidic body or simply as a lovely cool drink with yogurt and water... Lassi.
  • In the Chelsea Market in Great Britain they sell a huge variety of flowers for teas and other uses.
  • The French love their lavender, in tea to relax and de-stress; a sprig of lavender in Champagne
  • Lavender flowers on top of a chocolate cake, and small lavender flowers in sorbets.
  • The Greeks like to eat their big meal in the middle of the day (very sensible by the way), and their lighter meal in the evening. They often make an omelet with squash flowers as their later meal.
  • The American Indians used the whole white clover plants in salads and made a medicinal tea of white clover blossoms for coughs and colds.

WARNING: Not all flowers are edible. Make sure the flowers you are about to eat are edible. Search on line. Also make sure you don't eat flowers from florists or off the side of the road. They should come from pesticide free gardens that are grown on good soil. Flowers have varying degrees of nutritional value depending on how and where they are grown: roses are high in Vit. C; lilies in Vit. A and C; and Nasturtiums in C and minerals.

Here are a few flower recipes:

A SALAD OF FLOWERS AND HERBS

Ingredients:
  • One head red leaf lettuce, cleaned and torn
  • 1 cup mixed herbs (marjoram, thyme, oregano or herbs de Provence)
  • Picked over and cleaned 1 cup petals, day lilies, roses and nasturtium
  • Dressing:
  • 1/2 cup pink grapefruit juice from grapefruit
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 5 turns freshly ground black pepper
  • Grated zest of one orange
  • 1/2 cup grape seed oil
Directions:
Toss together in a large bowl the lettuce, herbs and flowers.
Combine all the dressing ingredients except the oil in a 12-ounce jar with a lid. Cover and shake. Allow to sit for about 15 minutes; then pour in the oil. Shake well again. Store chilled. Stream 1/4 cup dressing around the edge of the bowl and toss to coat.

DAY LILY FRITTERS

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup unbleached white flour or Einkorn flour which has less gluten and is very light (good for delicate flowers)
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 cup ice cold soda water or apple cider
  • 2 to 3 cups grapeseed oil for frying
  • 1 to 2 pounds of fresh day lily buds

Directions:
In a small to medium-sized bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together until fully mixed. Add 1 cup of cold soda water (be sure it's ice cold as this will help your batter crisp up nicely) and gently whisk, being careful not to over-mix. A few lumps in the batter are ok and preferable to an over-mixed batter as you don't want the gluten to develop.

In a small heavy skillet or saucepan, heat the grapeseed oil over medium heat. The oil should be just a little more than an inch deep and should reach a temperature of about 350 F to 375F. I rarely take a temperature reading, instead I simply drop a bit of batter into the oil as a test. If it starts to sizzle and bubble right away, the oil is ready. It's important to make sure the oil is hot enough because hot oil prevents your batter from absorbing too much oil as it fries.

Once your oil has reached temperature, grab your day lily buds by the stem and dip each one into the batter. It's ok for the green stem to stick out of the batter; it will fry up and be delicious to eat as well. I find working in small batches is best, no more than 5 fritters in the oil at a time to properly monitor them. Drop each battered bud into the oil carefully to avoid splashing, and allow it to fry for about 1 minute or until crisp and golden; then flip it on the other side using tongs and fry it for about another minute. Remove the fritter from the oil and place it on a sheet of paper towel to absorb any excess oil. Eat warm, with a sprinkle of sea salt or your favorite dipping sauce. Bon Appetit.

RAW DAY LILY APPETIZER

Ingredients:
  • 3 cups leaves and soft tops of wood sorrel
  • 1 cup pine nuts, soaked for 30 min.
  • ½ tsp. Celtic sea salt
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely minced
  • 35-40 unopened day lily buds
Directions:
Rinse wood sorrel and place it together with nuts, salt and garlic in the food processor. Blend until the mix resembles a thick paste. If necessary, add a touch of water to achieve the desired paste consistency. Separate the petals of the lily buds a little, and place ½ tsp. of the pesto between or on top of the buds. Serve as an appetizer.

DAY LILY SALAD

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups day lily buds (about 50 buds), sliced
  • 1 cup torn lettuce
  • 1/2 medium cucumber, sliced
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 2 celery ribs, sliced
  • 1/4 cup shredded red cabbage
  • 3 radishes, sliced

Directions:
Mix and add salad dressing of your choice

RECIPE FOR PANSY CREPES

Ingredients:
  • 3-4 free range organic eggs
  • 6 Tbs. of organic grape seed oil (or split with raw melted butter)
  • 2 Tbs organic sprouted spelt flour, Einkorn flour or a combination mixed with buckwheat flour
  • Alcohol free vanilla extract, 1/4 to 1/2 tsp.
  • Honey or stevia -- just a bit (optional)
  • 1 cup of pansy flowers.
  • Butter for pan or oil
  • Crêpe pan is best but not necessary.
Directions:
Beat ingredients together
Melt 1Tbs butter in pan or more if needed
Heat until sizzling
Take a small ladle full of batter and put in center of pan and swirl the pan until it reaches around the pan. Drop a handful of pansies onto the cooking crêpe.

They should cook pretty quickly, then flip to the other side -- less than a minute.
Add your favorite topping -- berries, or syrups, jams or jellies
The first crêpe is a throw away. For some reason, they never come out well. But it tastes delicious so go for it.

The Myriad Health Benefits of Hydrogen

Yet Another Great Way To Deliver Hydrogen For The Myriad Health Benefits It Gives!

I first found out about the ionic foot-baths from a psychoanalytic patient of mine who had just returned from London. He told me about (what he considered to be) an amzing device that had boostred his energy, and gotten rid of a long-standing leg pain. I liked what he said enough to look for the device he described, and after a reasonable amount of research, I subsequently bought it for La Casa.

As I was awaiting delivery of it, La Casa got a phone call from a woman, Susan, who had been told by the manufacturer that we had bought the device. She was eager to come in for a session. I had to regrettably tell her the device hadn't arrived yet from England. She called the next week, re-asking for an appointment. Again, I had to tell her that I wasn't ready to perform the treatment -- that  although it had arrived, I hadn't hadn't time to take it out of the box. She called yet again the next week; by then, it was out of the box, but we hadn't figured out how to use it. Finally, a month after her first inquiry, the device was ready to be used, and she happily came in for the treatment.

I asked her why she was so enthusiastic about it, and told her that I had never had a client hound me for a session as she had. She told me that she (like my psychoanalytic patient) had had the treatment in London. She had walked into the spa hobbling because of a spasm in her calf. When she left the spa, she saw the bus she needed on the corner about to take off, and she realized that she would have to run to catch it. Instead of hobbling, she was fleet-footed. Got the bus. Was happy and pain-free.

Susan became a regular client for La Casa's Pedi-Detox therapy. Since that first appointment with Susan, we have performed thousands of sessions with the Aqua-Detox device. Just one of the experiences we had was with a woman, Miriam, who had been diagnosed with cervical cancer. She had been treated successfully for it, but felt that a good cleanse was called for. The first time Miriam used the device, the water turned stark black, and became thick with mass. By the time Miriam came to La Casa, I I had had exoerience with hundreds of sessions with the device, and had never seen the water morph into such a dark color with such thick gook. Miriam bought a series of 30 sessions By the end of those sessions, the water was turning a light brown, and the ugly gooky mass had disappeared.

A few years later, about 5 years ago, the TV show Inside Edition called me to ask if I would go on their show to talk about the Ionic foot- bath. I said I wasn’t interested.

The next day, I was walking out of my building to go to yoga class, and I was confronted a bevy of reporters and cameras, yelling in my ear that they wanted a statement from me. I kept walking, not prepared to talk to the press. They followed me down the street, still yelling, accusing me of dastardly deeds by offering what they described, on-air, as a useless therapy. I referred them to the research on the device, which is plentiful, as well as testimonials. I did offer the information that the device has a Class II certification as a medical device in UK (insuring safety). It was also rigorously tested and passed under the MDD (Medical Device Directive) in Europe. But their position was clear. Inside Edtion was doing a hatchet job.

I am bringing this unpleasant experience up because apparently Inside Edition re-aired the piece the other day. Lots of people listen to Inside Edition, including some of La Casa’s clients. That day four clients cancelled their Pedi-Detox appointments.

I want to refer to what the esteemed Dietrich Klinghardt has said about the ionic foot-bath. If you don’t know his name, check out the panel to the right, and follow the links. He is one of the most trusted voices in the holistic field. His reach is enormous, his integrity impeccable, the respect he garners legion.

He explains that during an ionic foot-bath session, large concentrations of negative hydrogen ions are released during the process of electrolysis. (The array that sits in the water is what effects this electro-chemical reaction.) These ions are then absorbed into the body by osmosis through the epidermis of the foot. Once entered into the system, these negatively charged ions act as ultra high-powered antioxidants.

The feet are specifically used because they provide a large surface area of pores for the absorption of these negative hydrogen ions. It is these hydrogen ions that provide the detoxifying benefits of an ionic foot-bath. And, it is simply more comfortable than placing your hands, face or entire body in the water for an extended period of time.

Klinghardt further explains: “An antioxidant is a compound which has a weak attraction to one of its electrons. It readily surrenders an electron to a free radical that neutralizes it and ends the electron 'stealing' reaction. The ion does not become a free radical by donating an electron because it is stable in either form. Once the free radical is neutralized, it can be removed from the body.”

The negative hydrogen ions are thus acting as free radical hunter-gatherers, helping to prevent cell and tissue damage.

In terms of La Casa’s experience, we have had good success with the device. We routinely have clients saying they feel better after using it. But we also have seen improvement in various diseases, including long-standing degenerative diseases. We stand by our understanding of the therapeutic efficacy of the technology. And, if you are a reader of past Musings, you will know that we are IN LOVE with hydrogen, and feel that it is going to revolutionize the practice of medicine. The Pedi-Detox is one more way that we have of delivering the all-important hydrogen molecules to the body.

Call me "Yoga Jane." I am a late-starter to yoga -- been doing it for 20 years. That sounds like a lot, but when you have been alive as long as I have, 20 years is almost a blip. I just celebrated 72 Years on this Beautiful Earth! These pictures were taken on the day of my birthday.

People ask me my secret of youthfulness. it's not one thing: it's many.

     I've been a vegatarian for 50 years;

     I move my body in some fashion every day: yoga, or running, or swiming;

I don't fight my thoughts and feelings. I let them all flow through me, as though they are breath -- in and out.

         I do the therapies at La Casa on a routine basis. This includes the "woo-woo" frequency healing therapies, of which I have become a huge fan. If it's a therapy at La Casa, I do it, because I only bring into La Casa what I incorporate into my life-style;

         I love and am loved.

All of the above has brought me to the 72 years old, still vigorous, with no afflictions, no diseases, and most days with no pain. My genetic history would have probably predicted that I would be dead by this point. My mother died at 64; my sister died at 57-- both of cancer. (My mother did succeed in reversing her terminal bone cancer -- through diet and nutrition -- but after my father's sudden death, she GAVE UP. She was dead two years later, with the cancer back in full deadly force. Although I have not been genetically tested, I have to suppose that the odds of my getting cancer from genes are relatively high.

I did recently have a bout with mild sciatica, but a trip down to La Casa Puerto Rico cured that. Maybe the warm ocean water, maybe the cold El Yunque mineral-rich waterfall water, maybe eating vegetables right after I picked them from our garden.

Anyway. after witnessing my mother's indifference to life after my father's death, I adopted the mantra:

GIVE EVERYTHING BUT UP.

READER'S COMMENTS

Lots of you had thoughts about our last Musings, about "The Amazing Healing Benefits of Stinging Nettles." We love hearing from you! Keep them coming!

"Richard can pick Stinging Nettles with his hands, no problem. I can't -- he has a stronger immune system. If I pull regular grass out around my herbs without gloves, I get a terrible itching sensation! I don't know of any food or herb that doesn't have side effects for someone. However, I haven't heard of anyone dying from stinging nettles, and they have been used for thousands of years (unlike untested pharmaceuticals.) Nettles hardly ever has any effect on anyone. It's extremely rare. I can't eat them more than a couple of days. They are extremely detoxifying, so the release of toxins from the liver will most likely cause side effects. A release of toxins always makes one feel light headed — but I would rather get a little dizzy from nettles than get liver damage from Tylenol.”

Musings from 20th Street

Farewell to our dear friend, Muli Green.

He was filled with light, intelligence, a passion for life, wisdom, generosity, and above all, love for his wife and two daughters.

Look at the joy in his eyes.

Muli with his wife Zipi and beautiful daughters, Mia and Zoe.

I'd also like to take a moment to pay tribute to Alec Sutton. He was taken away from the world, his mother and his friends by a drunk driver late last year. 18 years old, a young man of imagination, cleverness and a future about which he was greatly excited.

We will all miss him enormously.

I welcome our guest writer, Mary Houston, who has genrously written for Musings in the past. We have stinging nettle on my farm in Puerto Rico, and I can sometimes buy it at the Farmers' Market at Union Square in NY. I can usually find it at the Windfall Farms stand, as I did this past week. I knew to use it for tea -- but pesto? This is such good news for me, as I make fresh pesto every week from Farmers' Market basil. Now I have a recipe to enhance the benefits of my delicious pesto. I made it in abundance this past week, and passed it on to grateful friends. Ate some of it myself; delicioso. Put the rest in the freezer.

Thank you, Mary.

THE AMAZING HEALING BENEFITS OF

STINGING NETTLES

My journey -- and journey it has been! -- with stinging nettles began about ten years ago. I was sitting in a café in Vermont reading a book on Indian philosophy when a young man at the next table asked me about the book. We soon began talking philosophy and then he told me his story.

He had been homeless, living on the street and mentally ill with psychotic delusions. It was during this time he began to pray and heard a voice speaking to him. The voice guided him to eat the weed along the side of the road. He began to live off the weed for the most part and, as he did, his delusions subsided and he began to get well and strong. He later researched the weed and discovered it was stinging nettles. As soon as I returned home I looked up all the research I could find on stinging nettles.

Stinging nettles are the most amazing herb. It's free and grows everywhere. It has so many health benefits. What helped the young man get well, amongst many of its attributes, was that it contains high amounts of serotonin. Serotonin is one of two brain chemicals that, when out of balance, cause depression, mental illness and psychosis.

Of course, there are other possible reasons and chemical imbalances that cause depression and mental illness. However stinging nettles worked for this young man. Perhaps Divine intervention!

Here are some of its other benefits: Hildegard Von Bingen, the medieval mystic, first historical composer, healer, herbalist, playwright, and the first woman to be the head of a monastery, used stinging nettles in the early Spring to detox the body. It's also used for dissolving kidney stones. It's wonderful for anemia and increases circulation. It stimulates the metabolism and is anti-inflammatory. Studies in Frankfurt and Munich Universities demonstrated small amounts eaten every day seem to remove the pain of arthritis and rheumatism.

This was only my first brush with the legacy of stinging nettles. It's been used throughout recorded history. The Greeks and Romans used it on wounds and as poultices to heal wounds and pain.

I took a book reading class at the Monastery in Woodstock and we read The Life of Milarepa. Milarepa was an enlightened Tibetan Mystic. He lived for long periods of time on only stinging nettles... so much so that he apparently turned green! I often wondered if this helped him achieve the State of the Clear Light. First of all, it detoxifies and cleanses the body, and it alters brain chemistry. Perhaps someday we will know?

Since I eat mostly raw, I don't cook my stinging nettles, but you can find many recipes that do. You can make a stinging nettles soup with vegetable stock. Just add handfuls of nettles (wearing rubber gloves, of course), add other veggies (carrots, turnips or potatoes) and simmer until softened.

You can also make nettle tea. After picking your nettles hang them upside down to dry. Once dried, place them in a clean container. Use a teaspoon or two for tea.

I make a stinging nettles pesto. Pick your nettles in early Spring. I wear gloves, long sleeves and pants because the little hairs really sting which is why most people blanch or cook them. However we discovered that if you put them in the food processor they lose their sting. Some people are not bothered by them.

Here is my recipe for STINGING NETTLES PESTO:
Makes: 1 generous cup

1/2 pound nettles
4 large garlic cloves, smashed (or less)
1/2 cup pine nuts
1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 1/4 cups extra virgin olive oil
(1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese: OPTIONAL. I use almond cheese made at home.)

Optionally, you can also add some basil to your nettle pesto.

The pesto freezes well so you can make enough to last you throughout the summer and fall. You can have it on spaghetti. I also like to serve it on raw spiralized zucchini spaghetti. Put it on sliced tomatoes with mozzarella or almond cheese for a snack. Use it as a salad dressing. Wilt it to put in a salad or as a vegetable for dinner.

Bon appétit and enlightenment!

Mary

A TIP FOR CLEARING NEGATIVE ENERGY AT HOME

A tip from Gwen Foster, who created the Nu|Vision, which is a scanning system I use for La Casa clients (when appropriate).

Give it a try and see if it makes a difference in how a room feels -- whether it feels heavy and depressing, or light and airy!

To clear rooms from negative energy that may be trapped:

Negative Energy Water Trap

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 teaspoons granulated salt
16 ounces filtered water

Directions:

Get a clear glass and add all of the ingredients and mix well for 60 seconds. Position the glass in a place you spend a lot of time and leave it there for 1 complete day.

Check to see if the salt is rising, once it stops it has captured all of the negative energy and you can cleanse another area of the house.

ADORATION OF THE PIGEON

Some surprising information about our feathered friends, courtesy of the fantastic Mother Pigeon (who, if you live in New York City, you have no doubt seen around Union Square and Williamsburg):

1. Pigeons mate for life. Both parents make milk and take turns feeding their babies.

2. Pigeons do not carry diseases. This is a money-making lie by greedy exterminators.

3. Pigeons have remarkable homing instincts. The location where the bird is born is where he will spend the rest of his life. Say hello to your resident pigeon.

4. Pigeons are highly intelligent. They pass the "mirror test," able to recognize their reflection, are only one of 6 species and the only non-mammal to do so.

5. The reason you don't ever see baby pigeons is because unlike most birds that fledge at 2 to 3 weeks, pigeons fledge at 2 months. By then, the baby is fully feathered and looks like a grumpy old man with a big beak.

6. A fully grown pigeon has about 10,000 feathers.

7. Pigeons have been known to live up to thirty years. City birds only live up to 2 years because of lack of food and clean water.

8. Big cities do not provide bird baths or clean water for the wildlife. Pigeons love to bathe and preen. Their favorite food is crushed peanuts and high quality birdseed. My favorite thing to do is sit on a park bench and feed the birds. It is fun to get to know them.

9. Look at pigeons the same way you would a rose or a bed of wild flowers. They are each beautiful and unique, with each one different from the rest. It is a privilege to have them here.

Dying Should Be A Selfish Endeavor

Musings from 20th Street

Dying Should Be A Selfish Endeavor

My patient Rona is dying. She has been my psychoanalytic patient for 30 years and has struggled against her cancer for 15 years. She has had Stage 4 cancer for seven years. She fought the good fight, a valiant fight, and truly, for many years, it had seemed as though she were indefatigable. She has been telling me that she is dying for a few months now, and in spite of her being bone-thin, I still saw and heard life energy in her. Her voice and spirit were strong in spite of her frail body. Although she needed help to make it up the two flights of stairs to my office, still she plowed through it, and never missed a session.

Until she did. Two weeks ago, she explained that she had simply slept through the session. She had begun painkillers. After not wanting to pollute her body for many months with the toxicity of painkillers (and this, in spite of being on chemo and immune therapies for the cancer for all of the 15 years of her cancer ordeal — she was a bit irrational about the reluctance to take any painkillers other than Advil), she finally relented to the more powerful morphine drugs — the ones reserved for hospice patients. And she began to live her life through the haze of a drugged sleepiness, but with considerably less pain.

Rona wanted to die at home, with her beloved husband of 38 years at her bedside. Home Hospice was arranged. Through Medicare, she was awarded the use of a home health care person two days a week, for an hour and a half each day.

Rona described her husband as trying to help her, trying to assist her in sitting up, helping her to eat, getting her to the bathroom. She described that (in spite of his having been a physician) he kept pulling her arm in the wrong way, or positioning her leg at the wrong angle. He was trying. She appreciated his feeble attempts, because they were his bestowal of love. But, the fact was, the only time she could really move without pain was when the home health person came. At those times, twice a week, Rona got a shower. She wanted one every day. She wanted to still be able to stand, and look in the mirror (though the sight of her thinness horrified her); she wanted to brush her hair and put on a little lipstick to meet the day — even though meeting the day meant greeting it from her bed.

Rona had one desire before her death. She had told me every year, each year that she was in analysis with me, that Easter was her favorite holiday. She looked forward to her whole family gathering together — to the grandchildren hunting for the eggs, to the meal that all shared. She liked that there were no presents. Christmas was always more taxing than she felt it was worth, with the pressure to find the perfect gift, the stress of needing to be “happy.” Easter was, for her, just about family. Not about happiness. Not about shopping. Not even about eating. Just about family gathering together.

Rona made it to Easter. And, indeed, her family came from around the country, knowing that it would be their last Easter with her. They gathered around her bedside. And then Rona did a remarkable thing. She asked each of them what they were going to say at her funeral. She wanted to hear her eulogy. They cooperated with her request, and told her what only her spirit would have heard on that imminent day that they were all awaiting with reluctant anticipation. She heard a great outpouring of love with their “live eulogy.” But she heard more. She heard that she had been “seen,” really “seen” for all the years that she had shared with her family. Rona had always felt defensive about her intelligence because of not going to college (though, in fact, she had a keen, innate intelligence). She had never considered herself especially pretty (though she had an appealing, attractive femininity about her). Rona defined her best qualities, and what she valued most about herself, as her warmth, her acceptance of people in a non-critical way, her generosity, her willingness to give. And, all this is what her family said to her in their live eulogy. Of all the gifts that Rona had ever gotten in her life, she felt that her family’s recognition of “seeing” all this in her was the greatest gift of all. She and I laughed at her great invention — a living eulogy: a eulogy for the still alive rather than for the recently dead. We decided that a live eulogy should be implemented by all as a way of dying.

The family left. And Rona was left alone with her thoughts, her feelings, and her bodily pain. We talked again about the home health person coming twice a week. I asked if she could get more time from her. She said “Yes, but we would have to pay out of pocket.” I asked how much. “$125 for the day.” That seemed like a bargain to me. I asked her if she wanted to do that — hire the woman for more time. Rona answered that she would have to discuss it with her husband. I said, “Really?”

Rona had spent her adult life working in her husband’s medical practice. She ran his office. She worked every bit as hard as he did caring for his patients, doing the billing, organizing appointments and filing insurance claims. It is possible that she worked even harder than he did.

I found it odd that she felt that she needed to discuss with him — as in “ask his permission” — to spend their money to make her dying days more comfortable. It was the dark side of Rona’s unrelenting giving: her giving to her own sacrifice. I asked her about this — why she didn’t feel entitled to spend the money. She talked (as any loving partner would have) about wanting him to have enough money to make his ensuing years without her comfortable. It sounded reasonable. But still: she was dying. Why couldn’t she decide to make her dying more comfortable? Why couldn’t she, at these last moments on this planet, decide to make her life just a little easier to endure, as endure had become all of what these last months and days had come to mean? To be just a little selfish, perhaps?

I asked if she thought that she could make, at least, her dying a selfish endeavor.

I have come to this point with cancer patients in the past. I think of it as the point when their life meets their destiny: the funnel point, the end of a long journey of encroaching awareness. It’s the moment when it seems as though all energy of that person’s life has spiraled down, from a wide entry point, and coalesced into one intense, infinitesimally small point of energy — a funnel of life energy/life purpose/life meaning. And, it seems as though that moment represents the most important challenge, the most important lesson of that life, and it represents a moment when the person can embrace the destiny they were meant to have, live it, and learn from it. Or not.

My patient, Miriam, too, had been given a cancer diagnosis. But unlike Rona, her body had not yet been fatally ravaged by her disease. Her funnel point came when she realized that she was spending her life caring for her brother who had become a quadriplegic from a motorcycle accident. In allowing herself to finally see that her brother had to live his own life, as limited as it was, Miriam made the decision to reclaim her own. And as she embraced recapturing the propulsion movement of her own life, instead of piggybacking on her brother’s, her cancer mysteriously (miraculously) disappeared.

The funnel point, when there is a rapid reversal of the direction of how one has lived his or her life, may look like selfishness. It may even FEEL like selfishness. But, I see it rather, as the crucial point at which one is faced with a decision of living one’s own life.

This profession that I practice — psychoanalysis — doesn’t promise happiness, wealth, or bodily health. (It may result in any of those, but they are mere secondary gains.) Its only promise — a rather limited ambition for a timely and costly endeavor — is freedom: the freedom to have of all one’s thoughts and feelings, and the freedom to be able to translate that complex, contradictory and stunningly rich domain of the interior of one’s mind and psyche into words: the freedom of articulatable awareness.

Unlike Miriam, Rona met that place at a time when her decision to reverse the energy direction of her life was too late to save her. But she is now getting a shower every day; her dying with just a bit of selfishness has changed the way she is living with dying. Sometimes, that is all we, as healing practitioners, can do.

La Casa Spa and Wellness Center was created out of the experience one woman had with her mother. Long before holistic medicine became widely known, Dr. Jane Goldberg spent the 1970s seeking alternative cancer therapies for her mother, who had been diagnosed with terminal bone cancer. Following sound principles of holistic health, Jane's mother was able to reverse her cancer condition entirely, moving from her wheelchair to joyfully playing tennis again. This experience inspired Jane to specialize in her psychoanalytic practice to work with cancer patients, and to fulfill the need for a holistic healing center in NYC. In Defense Of Shivering

My absolute favorite activity at my recent two-week stay at Hippocrates Health Institute was the cold plunge. I spent every day at the end of the day alternating between the Dead Sea warm pool, and the VERY COLD cold plunge. I have noticed that my essential metabolism seems to have changed since I have been plunging into cold water. Last week, when frigid weather enveloped New York City, I was walking around in a light coat, and truly enjoying the cold air. I felt pleasantly chilled.

I decided to review all the research I had done over the years on cold water therapy. And then decided to begin every day with a cold shower. BRRRR… By the fourth day, I actually began to enjoy the shower.

Cold Water Therapy

Cold water specifically helps to oxidize the cells of tissues, increasing the absorption of oxygen and aiding in the elimination of carbonic acid. In making parts of the body cold, you are actually asking your own circulation system to warm you from the cold. This exercising of the circulatory system builds up a resistance in the body to take care of ordinary situations—drafts, cold weather, and exposure to pathogens—all of which might cause illnesses if you’re in a weakened state.

The yogis from long ago understood how to use cold water therapy to achieve absolutely precise effects in the body.

For a clear mind:
Get in the shower and let cold water fall just below your lower lip for 15 minutes.

For energy:
In the shower, let cold water fall between your eyebrows and upper lip for 15 minutes.

To induce sleepiness:
In the shower, let the water fall on your forehead for 15 minutes.

Cold water for colds:
When you have a head cold, the fastest way of getting rid of it is to do a cold sponge bath. Make sure the bathroom is warm, and then sponge your whole body with cold water. Wrap up quickly in a sheet or big towel, without drying yourself. The principle here is that you're getting your body to respond more vigorously to warm you, so you don't want to interfere with your body's doing all the work. Then hurry to bed and lie there covered as warmly as possible for an hour. Do this every hour four times. Then get up and dress warmly. You'll notice that each sponging gets you to feel warmer. By the third sponge, you should actually begin to sweat when you are in bed. Congestion in your nose will clear up; in fact your nose may begin to run profusely for a while. And your head will feel lighter. It's a guaranteed one day cure for a chest or head cold. The next day you'll feel 100% better.

Cold water for infections and inflammations:
You can get good results with local infections and inflammations by using a cold water spray on the affected area. The process is the same. Wet the area with a shower spray, then cover yourself without drying and relax. Repeat this several times. Once you get the hang of this
therapy, you can get really creative and follow the basic rules while, at the same time, following your own intuition about what would help your body to respond.

Cold water for overweight:
Cold water therapy keeps the glands in good working order. There is almost always some kind of glandular disturbance in an overweight condition. Also, keeping the bowels and kidneys functioning, which cold water therapy effects, helps to discard toxins which often settle in as extra weight. For losing weight, it's best to do a hip spray in the morning and a back spray in the evening. These techniques help to both cleanse and keep the cells of organs well saturated with water. As well, the muscles will stay well-toned, and you will avoid that sagging that comes with weight loss. Of course, cold water therapy should be augmented with drinking lots of water and healthy eating habits.

To do the hip spray, aim the shower spray directly at your hip. Do this several times, then wrap up and jump into bed for a half hour. Remove the wrapping and stay in bed for another half hour.

To do the back spray, you need someone to aim the water at your back. Go up and down the back several times, wrap and go to bed.

For a complete body rejuvenation:
This is the most powerful yogic water application. Yogis believe that daily performance of this cold water shower will insure health and long life. First, coat your skin with almond oil. Then, immerse your whole body in water as cold as you can stand it. It may take a few attempts to get used to it but what’s remarkable about the technique is that after the first shock of the cold, you actually will feel warm, not cold. Your blood rushes out to meet the challenge of the cold and begins to generate its own heat. This is better than a sauna or a steam bath, where your body is passively heated; here it is an active process, activating your entire circulatory system and changing your entire bloodstream.

The technique is to stand under the cold shower, massaging each part of your body that the cold water is hitting. Use your feet to massage your calves and feet. The almond oil will help to keep the heat sealed in. Repeat the cold dousing and self-massage several times until you’ve been in the shower for 15 minutes. By the time you get out, you should feel toasty warm or even hot. Then towel dry yourself; put on warm clothes and wrap yourself in a blanket. This technique totally rebuilds your body and you will feel simultaneously invigorated and calm.

Cold water therapy was practiced some years ago at the Kneipp Sanitarium in Wörishofen, Germany. This was a highly successful and popular treatment for a variety of health problems; over 4000 patients a week were treated using cold water therapy. One of the keys that Sebastian Kneipp discovered was that if you have good circulation all the way down to the legs, it gives you good circulation all the way up to the head, and everywhere in between. The Kneipp Sanitarium became known for its Kneipp water walk, which consisted of a 30-foot walk through cold water which reached up to the knees. You can create the same effect as the Kneipp water walk.

Kneipp outdoor water walk:
Use a simple garden hose without the sprinkler attachment. Run the water against your leg, starting at the point that is farthest away from your heart, the ankle of your right leg. Move the stream of water up your leg until you reach your groin, then around and down the back of the other leg. Then do the same to the front. Let the water evaporate naturally; otherwise you don't get the benefit of your circulatory system getting activated. To augment the effect, end the treatment with a barefoot walk through either sand or grass. In the winter, you can do the same thing in your bathtub.

Kneipp indoor water walk:
Fill the tub with water just a few inches as cold as you can tolerate, and walk back and forth. It may be painful at first, particularly if your circulation is poor. But you will feel your feet begin to get a little numb, and then warm. This is the time to step out. Build up tolerance for being able to walk for five minutes. If you're really adventuresome, you can try the same thing outside in new, clean snow. In both

circumstances, warm your feet by continuing to walk for a while with shoes and socks.

Alternating hot and cold water therapy:
Alternating exposure to hot and cold water is an extremely powerful therapy. The simplest way of using hot and cold water therapy for health maintenance in your own home is using your morning shower.

Hot and cold shower:
Start with warm water. You can go to as hot as is comfortable. This will open the pores in your skin, and allow them to exhale toxins. Then ease into cool water that will close your pores.

Make the water increasingly cold until your breath quickens. This is the response that you want and where you should end your shower. At the right dosage, your body will have just received a good influx of invigoration and your skin will glow radiantly if you make this a regular part of your routine.

Another method of alternating hot and cold is to do a hot/cold wrap.

The hot-cold wrap:
You need first to line your bed with plastic. Take a sheet that has been dipped in a warm stew of herbal water, lay it out on the bed and wrap yourself thoroughly in it. Cover yourself with blankets and relax for a half hour. Then repeat this using the same sheet, now dipped in cold herbal water. This wrap is probably the most beneficial of the hot/cold applications, but also the most work.

Using alternating hot and cold packs is a way of drawing blood into specific organs and tissues when there are localized problems. In effect, you are stimulating the same circulatory response that is created by exercise. Because hot relaxes the tissues, blood is drawn into the area of the application. Cold, on the other hand, constricts the area, pushing blood away from the exposed tissues. By alternating hot and cold, you draw blood in, then force it out. Alternate the packs ten times, applying them for only half a minute cold, and a minute hot. This is a particularly effective treatment for moving along stagnant blood. Most benign growths are either caused by stagnant blood, or create stagnant blood. For instance, fibroid tumors in women respond well to frequent use of hot and cold packs applied to the abdomen. Using alternating hot and cold water in a sitz bath, which you can buy from your drugstore, is also an effective way of dealing with both gynecological and urinary tract problems.

Creating your own home spa:

The water that your skin is exposed to should be, as well as your drinking water, as clean as possible. Virtually all city water supplies are chlorinated; most are fluoridated. If it's not good enough for our insides, it's not good enough for our outsides. One of the best treats you can give to yourself is to make an investment in a shower filter. Get a good one.

You can turn your bathtub into a mini-ocean by simply adding Epsom salts to the water. Epsom salts are one of the all-time greatest detoxifiers, and help to draw impurities to the surface of the skin. After the bath, take a dry skin brush and brush vigorously to remove the dead skin cells and the toxins that these cells now hold.

Taking an herbal bath is the next best thing to going to a spa and having a body wrap. You can familiarize yourself with the common herbs and what they do, and hand-select your herb for its specific talent.

Alternatively, you can throw in a touch of essential oil that will leave your skin feeling well-nourished and baby soft.

For even more cold; really frigid cold:
I have also been going into a chamber that is 260 degrees below 0 (Fahrenheit). This process is called Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC). The maximum length of time in the chamber is 3 minutes. For my first two sessions, I made it to 2 ½ minutes. The next time, I broke the 3 minute barrier.

WBC was first used in Japan in 1978 by Dr. Yamauchi. He found that it reduced pain and inflammation in his patients for whom no other treatments were working. In the two decades since, technology has allowed us to perfect the application through sophisticated equipment. And, we have seen that the healing impact is not just limited to inflammation, but affects the endocrine, immune and nervous systems.

As you enter the cryo-chamber, the sudden drop in heat stimulates the temperature receptors of the body, prompting the brain to transmit messages throughout the body, whose temperature has dropped to 32 degrees. As the brain processes this new development, it sends signals to the body to protect itself, and activates an immune response that produces a host of benefits.

This process is what I have been speaking and writing about for several years now: The Hormesis Effect. Hormesis is the application of a stressor that stimulates the phenomenon that I call BOUNCEABILITY—the resilience to recover from the stressor and actually come to be better (better health, stronger, more fertile, less pain, longer life) than before the stressing agent was applied.

When you exit the chamber, blood is pumped vigorously around the body, which in turn enhances the oxygen supply and removal of toxins. The cold also triggers the nervous system to release feel-good endorphins. As well, the body’s natural anti-inflammatory reaction to extreme cold results in pain reduction.

The procedure has been especially embraced by athletes. The world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, used a cryosauna at the 2012 London Olympics. Alberto Salazar used it when coaching Olympic medalists.

These are the results you can expect:

BEAUTY AND ANTI-AGING

  • Cellulite reduction
  • Boosted metabolism promoting weight loss
  • Skin conditions ameliorated—including psoriasis, blemishes and acne
  • Collagen production—skin toned evened, visible signs of aging reduced

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Down But Not Out… The Puerto Rico Rebuild is Underway.

Though La Casa Puerto Rico has sustained considerable damage, we continue to operate as a farm, hosting WWOOFers (Willing Workers on Organic Farms.) Jubilant Jyl, our head WWOOFer, is amazing (as recent addition, Alec Beattie, describes below).

We are grateful for all the assistance they have given us. We are essentially renovating the renovation that we did for a year and a half before Majestic Maria found her way to the island. And we are doing this without electricity. But we continue… because we LOVE Puerto Rico, we LOVE our farm, and we LOVE the concept that we have for re-opening a most amazing holistic wellness center.

A word from Alec about his experience on the farm:

"This is a top notch place to WWOOF. Jyl is an amazing host, and very knowledgeable about gardening. In my time here, it was post-hurricane Maria, so there was still no electricity, but we never let it effect us. It was actually nice living off grid for a few weeks.

We planted a lot of Papaya, seeded a lot of starts -- basil, lettuce, thyme, mint, cucumber, watermelon etc. I also had the opportunity to help with putting a roof back on the main house. There is also a really nice cabin to stay in. Jyl is great about going to the beach, and having fun after a good day's work. Mucho love for this farm.”

READER'S CORNER

We've had a lot of great responses to the last edition of Musings, Forest-Bathing / Tree-Hugging: Getting Healthy the Natural Way!

Here are just some of the thoughts shared with us:

“I had my favorite hugging tree in Riverside Park and had amazing experiences with it. The tree you hug behind your house has special healing properties, as Pine needles are filled with Vit C, etc. They all have medicinal qualities. They also have special spiritual attributes. All ancient cultures knew that. We just planted a Hemlock tree from the forest here that we dug up—a small one onto of our dog Tiny's grave. They are very powerful, strong and beautiful trees. They are protectors. I love tree mythology and tree medicine!”

                - Richard Harvey

“Over 10 years ago I spent the weekend at a Casino. After my breakfast, I went for a long walk. I entered into a State Park & ventured to where the Park Ranger lived. He had just cut down a very big tree that morning. I told him I had been walking for hours and I knew that if I sat on the stump it would recharge me. I did so and it did - I wasn't as heavy, and my ankles felt better.”

                        - Dan Guzman

“I just wanted to let you know I loved this article on trees! This hits very close to home for me. I've had a few wonderful relationships with trees over the years—especially white pines and dogwoods. Thank you! I'm going to share this email.”

- Jodie (Glenwild Garden Ctr)

"Nice that we’ve discovered such similar practices. The major practice that I’ve been doing for the last 40 years is called Zhang Zhuang… translated as 'Standing like a Tree.'"

- Michael (Bodymind Healing)

“Loved your piece on trees! Check out my outdoor interactive installation show. We give people the opportunity to interact with trees in a tactile and visual way so that the dissonant becomes real.

It's the Trees of Life Sculpture Installation Show by artist Peter G. Pereira.
The show has toured internationally, and started on Governors Island during the Figment Festival in June since 2006.

You will not believe the way in which people of all ages delight in being able to touch the tree, play with it, love it and of course hug it — something they have never been able to do before because of the rough nature of bark. (Check out some of the video.)

I have observed that once this interaction occurs the tree develops character and that leads to love and that leads to preservation.”

                 - Karina Holosko

“Dora Moness Shapiro established Deborah in 1922 as a tuberculosis sanitorium to provide care for those who could not afford it. Her motto was ‘There is no price tag on life!’ Legend has it that Deborah's rural Burlington County location was the key to recovery because of its therapeutic Jersey Pine Barrens air. Thousands of tuberculosis patients were treated there and successfully cured. Perhaps it was not mere coincidence that the facility was located in a place replete with trees.”
                          - Ken Maffeo

Forest Bathing / Tree-Hugging: Getting Healthy the Natural Way

Forest-Bathing / Tree-Hugging:
Getting Healthy the Natural Way

The Japanese have a word for a health-inducing practice little known in the West: Shinrin-yoku. A rough translation is: Forest-Bathing.

I first started thinking about the healing power of trees when my neighbor in Puerto Rico (she lives next door to La Casa Spa and Wellness, Puerto Rico) told me an amazing story. She had been diagnosed with a serious illness that had rendered her unable to walk. She was carried outside every day, onto the patio, by her devoted husband, and began to absorb the intense and wonderful energy of tropical sunlight.

The experience of being outside in nature was soothing to her soul. Then something remarkable happened. As she lay on her lounge chair, she felt a specific tree, not far from where she was, call out to her. She wasn’t even sure what that meant. But she had an irresistible urge to be next to that one tree. She asked her husband to plant her (metaphor intended) under that tree. She immediately felt better, and asked her husband to bring her back to that tree every day.

Gradually, after a few months of “communing” with “her” tree—touching its bark, looking up at its high branches, sitting on its broad roots—her strength returned. When I saw her last, she was walking again, with the help of a cane—but definitely walking. She had made no other changes in her health regimen, and was convinced the tree’s energy had healed her, and reversed her disease.

After hearing my neighbor’s story, I decided to find a tree that I would call my own. I selected a lovely large tree with overhanging branches in the forest behind my house. I have made a practice of going out every morning, no matter the weather, and hugging “my” tree. I have found that a very deep sense of happiness descends upon me as I stand there with my arms around the tree. The tree has come to feel like a friend to me. And I hope that the tree, similarly, experiences me as a friend to it.

I also practiced tree-hugging during my recent stay at Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida. There were so many trees, it was hard to choose which tree to be my "tree-friend" for the two weeks I was there. I loved being there. I loved the raw food, the Dead Sea baths and the cold plunge. And I loved the trees. The whole campus had wonderful, old trees. It is always possible to find trees to befriend, even briefly, during vacations. Trees are, thankfully, everywhere.

 The Power of Trees

Both history, as well as modern science, tells us that trees have powerful effects on us. Historically, we have evidence that trees can help us think better: Plato and Aristotle did their best thinking in the olive groves around Athens; Buddha found enlightenment beneath a Bodhi tree; Isaac Newton discovered the theory of gravity sitting under an apple tree.

Today, we scientifically understand that all trees (as well as plants) have the ability to absorb the sun’s light frequencies and transform them into food for themselves. They then give energy back to us in the form of breathable oxygen.

Trees also give us food and medicines: Baby oak leaves are edible, and make great contributions to a salad or soup. The biggest additional benefit the majestic oak gives us is its acorns. They are high in protein and fat, both of which are important in cold weather.

Trees also loan us many of their elements, with which we make modern medicines. Compounds for more than half of the most commonly prescribed drugs come from trees. The Ginko is the oldest deciduous tree on Earth. They were thought to be extinct until a botanist happened to spy one growing in a garden in China. Benefits range from blood thinning to better memory, to boosting both the immune and neurological systems.

Cherry juice from cherry trees has been shown to be a powerful treatment for arthritic conditions, including gout. The wood from its branches can be used to flavor smoked foods. The white willow tree has a chemical substance called salicin in its inner bark. This substance has been infused in tea for centuries by the Chinese as well as Native Americans as both a pain reliever and fever reducer. A German chemist in the 1800s isolated this compound, and made a commercial pain reliever. His last name was “Bayer,” and the rest is over-the-counter history.

Apple trees, as well as proving gravity, offer the ability to make apple cider, and more significantly, apple cider vinegar. Vinegar is a natural antiseptic and has historically been an excellent resource for canning and food preservation. Yews are the source of Taxol, used in the treatment of some cancers. Tea tree oil is beneficial for skin infections. Cinchona tree bark contains quinine, the basis of many anti-malarial drugs. And Pycnogenol, which protects against deep vein thrombosis, is made from pine tree bark.

As with all living things, trees have energy frequencies. Because trees stand very still, the specific vibrations of trees are slow and steady. Their roots dig deep into the earth, and their branches reach skyward, and thus, they absorb the energies of the earth as well as the universal forces of the atmosphere and sky. When our own energy connects with trees, we respond with mind, body and spirit.

Therapist Karin Marcus uses trees as healings in her practice, and explains: “I use trees as a metaphor for self-examination by acknowledging our roots, finding our heartwood, and focusing on how we can branch out to provide shade and fruits for others.” Annie Day, also a therapist, similarly practices tree spirit healing. She places tree “witnesses”—leaves, twigs, bark and cones—on or near the body. Tree essence drops are placed under the tongue, under the nose to be inhaled, or specifically placed on chakra points around an injury.

The Science of Tree Healing

Science has validated that just looking at trees has beneficial health effects. Studies have shown that hospitalized patients recover more quickly with a 'green view.' Mount Sinai Hospital in New York redesigned its interior so that recovery rooms now have a view of Central Park. Research documents that just looking at a forest view (even on paper) for 20 minutes lowers the amount of the stress hormone cortisol by 13%.

Qing Li, from the Tokyo Medical School, tested blood and urine samples of people while they were Forest-Bathing. The results showed that the level of natural killer cells was significantly higher on the Forest-Bathing days. Natural killer cells release an anti-cancer protein that attacks tumors and cells infected by pathogens. The study showed that the levels stayed elevated for a full 30 days after. In addition, the levels of adrenaline in the urine were reduced.

The therapy of Forest-Bathing is now practiced in England as a treatment for anxiety, depression and stress. Physicians in Doncaster and Camden (North London) have been sending patients to “Green Gyms.”

In Blinded by Science, Matthew Silverstone gives evidence that trees improve many health issues that we have, including concentration levels, depression, reaction times, different forms of mental illness, and stress. Trees have been shown to have the ability to alleviate headaches in human beings. Silverstone also points to many studies that have documented that children show significant physiological, psychological and cognitive improvements when they interact with nature, trees and plants.

Researchers at the University of Illinois compared those who live in places surrounded by trees with those living in a treeless neighborhood. A large housing development comprising 28 tower blocks was studied, and it was found that residents who lived with trees nearby socialized with their neighbors more, felt safer and suffered 52 per cent fewer crimes. They felt emotionally and physically healthier than those in the ‘treeless’ blocks. Those living near trees showed:

  • Increased Killer Cell Activity
  • Reduced Stress and Anxiety
  • Increased Happiness
  • Improved Concentration (ADHD sufferers benefit hugely)

Cosmic Tree Healing Qigong

Beginning practitioners of Chinese internal organ massage (Chi Nei Tsang) are taught how to commune with trees. Taoist master Mantak Chia teaches his students to meditate with the trees of the earth as a way to release “negative energies.” Master Chia’s teachings, in his Cosmic Tree Healing Qigong method, show how to align one’s body with the living “aura” (or energetic field) of a tree. He also explains that trees provide a natural ground that can help you to transform your body’s sick or negative energy into positive and vital life force energy.

The Taoist tree meditation is to concentrate on seeing the trees in your mind’s eye, and focus on them. The Yin cycle is accessed by touching a tree with your palms and the inside of your arms. The Yang cycle is accessed by touching the tree with your fingertips and the outside of your arms.

According to Master Chia, trees are the most spiritually advanced plants on Earth. They are constantly in meditation, and subtle energy is their natural language. As your understanding of this language grows, you can begin to develop a relationship with them. They can help you to open your energy channels as well as cultivating calm and vitality. And the relationship is reciprocal. We can help trees with their own blockages and devitalized areas. It is a mutually beneficial relationship that needs cultivation.

Choose Your Tree

The best trees for healing are big trees, or trees that are near water. Pines are on the top of the list. They are called the “Immortal Tree,” and radiate Chi, nourish blood, strengthen nervous systems, and contribute to long lives. They are also said to nurture souls and spirits. Early Chinese poetry and paintings are full of admiration for pines.

Although pine trees are often the best choice, many other trees can be used.

  • Cypress and cedar trees reduce heat and nourish Yin energy.
  • Willow trees help to expel sick winds, rid the body of excess dampness, reduce high blood pressure, and strengthen the urinary tract and bladder.
  • Elm trees calm the mind and strengthen the stomach.
  • Maple trees chase sick winds and help reduce pain.
  • Locust trees help clear internal heat and help balance the weather of the heart.
  • Banyan trees clear the heart and help to rid the body of dampness.
  • Cinnamon trees can clear coldness from the heart and abdomen.
  • Fir trees help clear up bruises, reduce swelling, and heal broken bones faster.
  • Hawthorn trees help aid digestion, strengthen the intestines, and lower blood pressure.
  • Birch trees help clear heat and dampness from the body and help to detoxify it.
  • Plum trees nourish the spleen, stomach and pancreas, and calm the mind.
  • Fig trees clear excess heat from the body, increase saliva, nourish the spleen, and help stop diarrhea.
  • Gingko trees help strengthen the bladder and alleviate urinary problems in women.

When you adopt a regular practice of hanging out with trees, you may notice that each tree, like each person, has a personality, and a different sense of the energy it holds. Trees differ widely in their taste for human contact. Some are generous, and want to share their energy. Others are weak or ill, and benefit from your own healing energy. While some are friendly and enjoy human company, others can remain quite indifferent to human interest.

Those of us who live in an urban environment need not worry about not being near a forest. Many city and suburban trees are used to having people around. They understand our human energy, and are often more accessible and friendlier than those in the wilderness.

Selecting one tree, as my neighbor and I have done, allows us to develop a deeper relationship with that tree over time. Those who embrace tree-hugging often say that the communion they feel with their tree resembles love between humans. A quality of tenderness, care and concern should be present.

This question was asked by one of our trusty readers after the last Musings, "The Two Best Salts on the Planet," which was on Himalayan Black Salt and Himalayan Bamboo Salt.

Q: "I use Himalayn Pink Salt and no matter if I buy it from Costco or an expensive health store, it always leaves some grit. My dad said dissolve some in water and if it doesn't 100% dissolve it's not all salt. I did this a few times and sure enough it does not all dissolve, leaving some grit. I stopped using it in delicate recipes like pumpkin pie as the grit is noticeable. So my question is do you know what that is? Is it harmless minerals or perhaps stone ground so stone particles? Dr. Mercola once warned, I believe, that metal could get in if metal grinders were used? Anyway, if you have a better idea I'd love to hear it. Thanks,
    -Helene Pecora-Montalto

A: "Yes, as I say in the article: Rather than using chemical or mechanical means that could contaminate the resultant salt, the salt crystals are separated from the conjoining rock by hand. (Machines that are coated with lead-laced paint are of particular concern in salt mining procedures.)

So, perhaps the residue you are seeing is just that. I ONLY use those two salts now. Another good  salt I didn’t mention is Real Salt from Utah. Thanks for reading, and paying attention!

Researcher Dr. Devra Davis, Ph.D, points out: “[A] cellphone is a two-way microwave radio.”

With that understanding, would you allow your child to play with a microwave oven while it was operating?

WiFi is ubiqitous. It is at school and at home. These highly damaging ranges of radio-frequencies (2.4 to 4-5 Gigahertz) are pumped into our children’s brains and bodies all day from cell phones, iPads, and any other of the wireless two-way devices that are on the market, and that children are fascinated by.

It is really astonishing that intelligent and highly educated school board members, principals and teachers have bought into such destructive scientific chicanery! Many schools in Europe, in their greater wisdom, have either taken WiFi out of their classrooms or hardwired internet connections, rather than have microwaves supply the technology.

The Two Best Salts on the Planet

Musings from 20th Street

THE TWO BEST SALTS ON THE PLANET:

Sulfur-Rich Himalayan Black Salt and Bamboo Salt

I have long had a love affair with salt. I like most of my food salty. More salty than anyone I know, and probably more salty than most of the people on the planet. I can’t explain it. I know many people are able to happily eat non-salty food. I am just not one of them.

Of course, traditional medical thought has taught us that salt is bad for our health. Health authorities have been telling us for decades to restrict our sodium intake. They suggest that we should consume no more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day, which amounts to about one teaspoon.  That’s about the most unappealing idea for food that I can imagine.

This thinking says that salt affects the body by making it hold on to water. The extra water is then stored in the body, raising blood pressure. The higher your blood pressure, the greater the strain on your heart, arteries, kidneys and brain. And this can then (presumably) lead to heart attacks, strokes, dementia and kidney disease.

Indeed, there is some research that supports the risk of high sodium intake. Solid research shows that high salt intake may increase the growth of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that can lead to inflammation and gastric ulcers, which can then increase the risk of stomach cancer. Also, a diet high in salt may damage and inflame the stomach lining, thus exposing it to carcinogens.

However, it is important to understand that these cited studies are observational, and do not fit the gold standard of a controlled experimental study proving cause and effect. They do not prove that high salt intake causes ulcers or stomach cancer—only that the two are strongly associated. Also, these studies evaluated the use of table salt. Table salt is two minerals: sodium and chloride. All other minerals that are present in truly natural salt have been stripped from the final product. About 75% of the salt in the American diet comes from processed food, and this salt is highly refined, mineral-less, table salt. Even with the disadvantages of table salt, in spite of decades of research on salt, most of the studies have failed to provide convincing causative evidence to support the contention of dangers of too much salt.

In contradistinction to the lots-of-salt-is-bad-for-you theory, many studies actually show that eating too little salt can be harmful. The negative health effects of salt restriction include:

  • Elevated LDL cholesterol and triglycerides: Salt restriction has been linked to elevated LDL (the "bad") cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • Heart disease: Several studies report that less than 3,000 mg of sodium per day is linked to an increased risk of dying from heart disease.
  • Heart failure: One analysis found that restricting salt intake increased the risk of dying for people with heart failure. The effect was quite strong: there was a 160% higher risk of death in those who reduced their salt intake.
  • Insulin resistance: Studies have reported that a low-salt diet may increase insulin resistance.
  • Type 2 diabetes: One study found that in type 2 diabetes patients, less sodium was associated with an increased risk of death.

Given the history of mankind, and our never-ending love affair with salt, it would seem odd that a substance that has, in ancient times, been as valuable as gold, would, in the final analysis, be bad for us. Throughout the evolutionary history of earth, many mammals have traveled long distances to situate themselves next to salt sources. We human mammals have been among those making these journeys. Our ancestors often chose to live near seashores because of the abundance of salt-laden sea algae.

The body has the innate and brilliant ability to regulate salt levels all on its own. Through adrenal and renal functions, and through sweat and tears, salt is instrumental in maintaining fluid balance between the internal and external environments of our cells. Our bodies also possess specific mechanisms to keep all electrolytes (of which sodium is one) within a narrow range by utilizing specific adrenal hormones. These hormones instruct the kidneys to either use the sodium, or excrete it into the urine. According to Adiel Tel-Oren, M.D., people who avoid salt tend to create an imbalance in this regulatory hormonal system. As a result, they suffer from electrolyte deficiency in the blood, as well adrenal fatigue, the symptoms of which are dizziness, inability to handle stress, intense fatigue, headaches, fluid retention, and sleep disturbance. The research is now sufficient for us to conclude that reduction in sulfur’s availability compromises health and accelerates biological degeneration and inflammation.

Like most health-concerned people, for many decades I have used the usual salt suspects that we health fanatics know to be the best salts to eat: Himalayan Pink Salt and Celtic Salt. Himalayan Pink Salt is land-mined, and is unpolluted. But it has one great disadvantage: it is harvested from sedimentary layers that lack an essential mineral: sulfur. Celtic salt has another disadvantage: it can be harvested from highly polluted seas that have been contaminated by agricultural, industrial and urban runoff.

Dr. Tel-Oren changed my salt preference when I met him a few years ago. He introduced me to Himalayan Black Salt, which is an entirely different animal than the usual Himalayan Pink Salt. The black salt is still pink in color, but comes from black rock high in Nepal. Dr. Tel-Oren has spent much of his time traveling to Nepal, taking trekkers up the Himalayan mountains, and supporting several orphanages there. He arranged for this black rock salt to be imported to the U.S., and, until now, it has been available only through Ecopolitan.com, a center in Minneapolis that Dr. Tel-Oren helped to establish.

Recently, I discovered another impressive salt: Bamboo Salt. These two salts are the only salts I use now, and I use them liberally with good conscience that I am not only not harming my body, but, rather, I am putting important and necessary materials into my body. Both salts are rich in a large variety of trace elements, but where they distinguish themselves from all other salts is in their high sulfur content. Sulfur is the third most abundant mineral in the human body.

Unfortunately, today, many of us are deficient in sulfur. Increasing levels of toxins in our food, water, and air, combined with lower food quality, have caused depletion of our bodily sulfur reserves. The elderly and vegetarians often suffer the greatest deficiency. This is one reason why organic sulfur supplements like MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) and DMSO are helpful.

Sulfur supports many metabolic functions, and the biological usefulness of sulfur in our bodies is essential and varied. It is present within every human cell. It gives us a youthful appearance, and good bodily locomotion. It plays a crucial role in the activities of many enzymes, in the structural strength of hair, skin, gums, and joints, and in the processes of cellular repair and regeneration. Sulfur-containing glutathione is one of the most important antioxidants within human cells. Sulfur is also a go-to compound for detoxification. It enables "sulfation"—a critical detoxification pathway in the liver and other tissues that is necessary for the survival of our cells and organs. Additionally, sulfur plays a crucial role in the activities of proteins and enzymes that contain sulfur-bearing amino acids. These bind heavy metals and chemicals for safe removal from the body.

Although sulfur is abundant in cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, collard greens) and allium plants (onions, garlic, chives, shallots and leeks), these foods no longer provide us with adequate amounts of sulfur. Domestication and hybridization of these foods, as well as the common use of petroleum-based agricultural methods, have created a situation where these foods alone can no longer supply us with adequate sulfur supplies. And, as well, the other high sulfur foods—eggs, meat and other animal products—have high levels of methionine, which has been shown in animal studies to shorten lifespan. Methionine increases homocysteine levels, resulting in damaged blood vessels, increased risk of stroke and heart attacks, depression, and dementia. (One researcher, Mark Simon, contends that cancer, too, is related to high methionine, and suggests a diet low in methionine to combat cancer. The food lowest in methionine is fruit. Mark Simon’s cancer-fighting dietary protocol is controversial, as it flies in the face of common holistic thinking that sugar consumption of any kind feeds cancer cells.)

Read on to find out more specifically about these two salts:

Himalayan Black Salt
Himalayan Black Salt is mined and harvested from pristine layers of earth, 300 million-years old in one of the most unpolluted places on earth. The salt is delivered to a government-approved fair trade facility in Kathmandu that is dedicated solely to the processing of the salt. The factory is owned by a humanitarian network of schools, orphanages, and community centers dedicated to preventing child trafficking as well as providing quality education and strengthening the local communities.

Rather than using chemical or mechanical means that could contaminate the resultant salt, the salt crystals are separated from the conjoining rock by hand. (Machines that are coated with lead-laced paint are of particular concern in salt mining procedures.) The salt is then hand-cleaned and crushed. Again, there is no risk of contaminants, heavy metals, or allergens entering the salt, as there is no chemical processing or refining, no heating, no cooking.  Black Himalayan salt is as pure and raw as it is possible to get.

The black salt has a higher sulfur content than the bamboo salt, and it is immediately noticeable as soon as you open the jar. It gives off the usual aroma of high sulfur-content substances, which is a rotten egg smell, and, as well, when used on food, the salt gives a slight eggy-flavor to food. (Many of my friends object to the smell, and ask me not to use it on the food I prepare for them—which is usually raw, as my diet is mostly raw. I have gotten used to the smell, and believe that repeated use would get everyone to come to enjoy the egg-iness of the salt. In any case, when you cook with the salt, the egg-iness smell disappears.)

Bamboo Salt
Bamboo Salt is made in Korea using a process developed over 1000 years ago by Buddhist monks. The making of bamboo salt incorporates the five elements—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Aether. (La Casa is based on the 5 element theory of the universe, and we call the Aether element Sky.)

The five element process begins with sun-dried sea salt from the Korean Bay (the element of Water). The salt is packed into bamboo stalks that are three or more years old. Bamboo (representing the element of Aether or Sky) can reach 50-foot heights in a short period of time, consuming large amounts of cosmic energy during its growth. The bamboo is then sealed with mineral-rich yellow clay (embodying the element of Earth). Salt-filled bamboo stalks are then fired/roasted at 1600°C (activating the element of Fire), using local pine wood. Oxygen fuels the fire as the bamboo is burned (incorporating the element of Air).

A  renowned Taoist healer named Insan (1909-1992) determined that the best number of times to repeat roasting the salt to optimize its therapeutic potential is nine times. The whole process takes three years to complete. Each time the salt is fired, any lingering impurities are burned off, and nutrients from the bamboo and the clay are assimilated into the salt. Repeated firing gathers and concentrates the elements, sending them into a high-velocity spin state.

As well as being high in sulfur, Bamboo Salt also contains high amounts of bio-available iodine, thus abundantly supporting the thyroid. Because it contains residues of carbon from the bamboo, it is extremely drawing—more so than other unprocessed salts. Carbon is well-known for its drawing qualities and for its use as a purifier. The unique alchemy that results during roasting appears to augment the drawing qualities of bamboo salt for a truly balancing, cleansing effect on the body, mind and spirit.

Solutions made with either of these salts can be therapeutically used as nasal rinses, gargles, eye washes, sprays, and foot baths.

Happily, La Casa now carries these highly nutritional salts for sale.

A message from Arthur Firstenberg (author of The Invisible Rainbow) following up on the recent Musings he wrote: "What You Need to Know About Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity."

Dear Friends,

The news, both in the New Mexico state legislature and the City of Santa Fe, is incredible.

First the City: Mayor Javier Gonzales has declared a "bad cell phone reception" state of emergency, permitting Verizon to begin putting cell towers and antennas anywhere on city property without application and without land use review, beginning December 12, 2017. The press release was issued this morning at 10:19am. He has declared a six month state of emergency under the city's Riot Control Ordinance! I kid you not. He has way overstepped his authority.

The Riot Control Ordinance only allows him to set a curfew, prohibit firearms in public places, and prohibit the sale of alcohol. Our City Code does not exempt "temporary" wireless facilities from zoning review. I am in a state of shock. I am pasting the Mayor's Proclamation of Emergency below this email. If he gets away with this, you can be sure the industry will try this elsewhere.

Now the State of New Mexico: The wireless industry has drafted an ordinance that will be introduced in the 2018 session titled "Network Nodes Deployment Act." It is bolder than anything we've seen so far. It states that cell towers and antennas in the public rights-of-way that are less than 50 feet tall or 10 feet taller than the tallest existing utility pole within 500 feet, whichever is taller, are "not subject to zoning review and approval." Period.

The lawsuit against the City, which we had already been putting together will be filed at the end of this week. We intend to put RF radiation on trial and challenge the constitutionality of Section 704 of the Telecommunications Act.

WE NEED DONATIONS TO PAY FOR THIS LAWSUIT. Please help if you can, by going to the donations page on our website. (Choose "Santa Fe Campaign" as the purpose of your donation).

Thank you!

Arthur Firstenberg

I would like to say here that this is the first product that La Casa has ever offered online through its Musings. That’s how much I believe in drinking H2 water.

La Casa has five different delivery systems for hydrogen:

  1. inhalation (specific for eyes, ears, brain, nose and throat)
  2. original or flavored water (most powerful systemic application)
  3. hydrogen colonic (alkalizing cleansing)
  4. nanovated hydrotherapy bath (combines smaller than nano-sized highly concentrated oxygen and hydrogen molecules)
  5. spray (anti-aging)

Soon, we will have, in addition, a hydrogen shower (as soon as the manufacturer finishes making it).

Inflammation, Free Radical Damage,
Oxidative Stress, Hydrogen and
Cancer

by Mark Sircus

Studies on brain tumors in the past 10 or more years have shown an increase in the incidence of brain tumors in the general population. Can you guess why this is so? Extensive research during the last two decades has revealed the mechanism by which continued oxidative stress leads to chronic inflammation, which in turn mediates most chronic diseases including cancer.

Oxidative stress, caused by rivers of free radicals, is a plague on modern man. Whether it’s the toxic pollution in the air you breath 24/7, the radiation your doctor exposes you to (1), pharmaceutical medicines, chemotherapy, your cell phone constantly at your brain, or even your Wi-Fi and other EMF pollution generating devices, you expose yourself to oxidative stress (2), which will drag you down into the pit of disease and cancer, putting an end to your happiness, health and even life.

Oxidative stress has been associated with numerous health conditions including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, insomnia, cancer, and just about every disease you can imagine. Yet doctors seem to ignore this fact and work as hard as they can to increase your oxidative stress, when they know we are already against the wall with toxins and stress. Imagine a patient, newly in remission from cancer, being exposed every three months to CAT or PET scans, which dramatically increase oxidative stress, just begging for the cancer to come back so they can treat it again.

Oxidative stress, directly or indirectly caused by chemotherapeutics is one of the underlying mechanisms of the toxicity of anticancer drugs in noncancerous tissues, including the heart and brain (3). During cancer chemotherapy, oxidative stress-induced lipid peroxidation generates numerous electrophilic aldehydes that attack many cellular targets (4). Oxidative stress, generated by almost all prescribed drugs as they are metabolized, acts as a source of origin and progression of many dreadful diseases. Reactive metabolites formed during this process cause oxidative stress and can impair the function of drug metabolizing enzymes leading to toxicity (5).

Pollution is a greater global threat than Ebola and HIV, according to warnings by the World Health Organisation. According to its recent report, one in four deaths among children aged under five are now due to environmental hazards such as air pollution and contaminated water. It is simple: poisons in our air and water create oxidative stress, disease, cancer and death. Epidemiological studies have shown a clear association between cardiovascular morbidity, decreased lung function, increased hospital admissions, mortality, and airborne concentrations of photochemical and particulate pollutants.

Cellular exposure to ionizing radiation leads to oxidizing events that alter atomic structure through direct interactions of radiation with target macromolecules or via products of water radiolysis. Further, the oxidative damage may spread from the targeted to neighboring, non-targeted bystander cells through redox-modulated intercellular communication mechanisms.

People who started using cell phones at an earlier age have a greater chance of developing a brain tumor when compared to people who started late (during their adult years).

When certain chemicals in the body lose an electron, they become positively charged (and are called "free radicals" or "oxidants"). These chemicals roam freely through the rest of the body stealing electrons from other cells. Free radicals damage cellular DNA. The majority of modern science has come to the conclusion that free radical damage in the human body is the cause of aging. Aging is evidence of the damage to millions of the body’s cells through oxidation. This oxidation is due to the lack of hydrogen anions that are available to stop free radical damage.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are a byproduct of normal metabolism. Even under pristine conditions when our cells use glucose to make energy we create a cascade of free radicals that cause oxidative stress. The more sugar we consume to greater our oxidative stress. When our immune system is fighting off bacteria and creating inflammation we suffer from increased oxidative stress. When our bodies detoxify pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and cigarette smoke we create oxidative stress.

Pancreatic cancer cells use the sugar fructose to help tumors grow more quickly. Tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the two sugars in two different ways, a team at the University of California Los Angeles found. Their findings, published in the journal Cancer Research, helps explain other studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancer types. Researchers concluded that anyone wishing to curb their cancer risk should start by reducing the amount of sugar they eat.

Oxidation increases when we are physically and/or emotionally stressed. However, as long as we have enough anti-oxidants, a careful balance is maintained and damage is prevented. Oxidative stress happens when the amount of free radicals exceeds the amount of antioxidants. That’s when oxidation damages our cells, proteins and our DNA (genes). Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants.

Hydrogen as Key Antioxidant

against Oxidative Stress and Cancer

Oxidative stress is closely related to all aspects of cancer, from carcinogenesis to the tumor- bearing state, from treatment to prevention. The human body is constantly under oxidative stress arising from many sources. Active oxygen species are involved in carcinogenesis through two mechanisms: (1) the induction of gene mutations that result from cell injury and (2) the effects on signal transduction and transcription factors (6).

Molecular hydrogen (H2) functions as an extensive protector against oxidative stress, inflammation and allergic reactions.7 H2 directly reacts with the strong reactive nitrogen species peroxynitrite (ONOO-) as well as hydroxyl radicals (•OH), but not with nitric oxide radical (NO). Molecular hydrogen is a new medical gas that can be dissolved in water and administered through drinking, inhalation, baths, intravenous drip (IV), and has been shown to suppress VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor), a key mediator of tumor angiogenesis (the development of new blood vessels), by the reduction of excessive ROS (oxidative stress) and through the down regulation of ERK (key growth factor needed for cellular division).

“Effects of molecular hydrogen have been observed essentially in all the tissues and disease states including the brain, spinal cord, eye, ear, lung, heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, intestine, blood vessel, muscle, cartilage, metabolism, perinatal disorders, and inflammation/allergy.

Among them, marked effects are observed in ischemia/reperfusion disorders as well as in inflammatory disorders. It is interesting to note, however, that only three papers addressed effects on cancers. First, molecular hydrogen caused growth inhibition of human tongue carcinoma cells HSC-4 and human fibrosarcoma cells HT-1080 but did not compromise growth of normal human tongue epithelial-like cells DOK. Second, hydrogen suppressed the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a key mediator of tumor angiogenesis, in human lung adenocarcinoma cells A549, which was mediated by downregulation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Third, hydrogen protected BALB/c mice from developing radiation-induced thymic lymphoma. Elimination of radical oxygen species by hydrogen should reduce a probability of introducing somatic mutations.” (8)

H2 has also been shown to reduce the excessive expressions of MMP genes (MMP proteins are in involved in multiple functions in cells, including cell proliferation, cartilage synthesis, apoptosis, angiogenesis, etc). It has been shown that cancerous cells have a higher expression of MMP genes leading to tumor invasion and tumor angiogenesis. H2 has been shown to reduce tumor invasion and tumor growth and because of this effect, H2 has been shown to have anti-tumor effects (8, 9).

“ERW [hydrogen water] causes telomere shortening in cancer cells and suppresses tumor angiogenesis by scavenging intracellular ROS and suppressing the gene expression and secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor. In addition, ERW induces apoptosis together with glutathione in human leukemia HL60 cells (Tsai et al. 2009a, b).” (11, 12)

“Treatment with both H2 waters (HHW and NHW) increased the expression of p-AMPK, AIF and Caspase 3 (cell apoptosis pathways) in colon 26 cells. Thus, H2 water resulted in cell apoptosis mediated by the AMPK pathway in colon 26 cells.” (13)

H2 may protect healthy tissue/cells from anticancer drugs and has been shown through medical studies that molecular hydrogen has a protective effect against chemotherapy drugs. Hydrogen has potential for improving the quality of life of patients during chemotherapy by efficiently mitigating the side effects of cisplatin.” (9)

Molecular hydrogen may have the potential to retard the development of some cancers. It was demonstrated that molecular hydrogen may protect and retard the development of thymic lymphoma in mice.

“The radiation-induced thymic lymphoma rate in the H2 (+) group was significantly lower than in the control group and H2 treatment significantly increased the latency of lymphoma development after the split-dose irradiation. These data indicated that H2 protects mice from radiation-induced thymic lymphoma in BALB/c mice.” (20)

Conclusion

I have personally observed a patient recover from near death with reoccurring breast cancer years after surgery, which had spread to her lymph system and then on to her brain. She wrote, “After a few visits to the ER, I found out I had a tumor on the cerebellum that was blocking fluid from draining down the spinal cord. On the base of my skull is a 2cm tumor. It's making me vomit and walk sideways. I could not keep food or water down and I began walking like a crab,” she reported on the 9th of September. Understanding the severity of the situation I took a long shot and recommended not only hydrogen water but also a hydrogen inhaler. On the 26th of September, using the full Natural Allopathic protocol with incredible dedication to slowing her breathing down, using the Frolov breathing device, she wrote, and “So I walk now! Eat like crazy, gained 10 pounds, and feel better every day. Don't drive yet but I walk in the neighborhood. Not far. Have not thrown up. Feel stronger ever day! Just hope to keep going!” I published her initial success in my essay New Advances in Gas Therapy and will soon report her full testimony. My readers will have to excuse my reporting on this case as it is happening but it is too exciting and too important.

Two years ago, before I even had heard about the miracles of molecular hydrogen I got a letter from another patient also on the verge of death. This patient reported, “Significant metastases in my spine, hips, ribs, neck, lymph nodes – and my PSA was 2,080,” I entitled my essay, ‘One foot in the grave when I found Dr. Sircus. He wrote, “I wanted to contact Dr. Sircus when I was completely healed and tell him my story. My PSA is now 2.1. If his protocol plus my work and the grace of God could get me off my death bed, and dancing all night with my family well maybe people should consider this wonderful protocol and try it.” I share these cases to show what is possible if people work hard enough doing the right things. Both of these patients showed extraordinary will successfully and willfully doing the most difficult part of my protocol, which is breathing retraining. Another famous case written up in my bestselling book Sodium Bicarbonate was Vernon Johnston, who breathed his way back to life by using sodium bicarbonate perfectly while breathing consciously four hours a day.

Hydrogen is new in medical science and even newer in relationship to the treatment of cancer. Hydrogen is safe, easily administered, a potent antioxidant, and gets everywhere it is needed because of its small size. I do not know of anyone reporting anything close to a case like this. It should be everyone’s hope that she makes it and recovers fully though a relapse is always possible. There is nothing to lose administering high dosages of hydrogen and everything to gain for cancer patients.

According to the National Cancer Institute considerable laboratory, evidence from chemical, cell culture, and animal studies indicates that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer. Antioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals) as well as enzymes (proteins in your body that assist in chemical reactions). Hydrogen just happens to be the smallest and as it does its work it promotes full hydration.

This Holiday Season—for the whole month of December--La Casa is offering a special on gift certificates. Buy an hour-long therapy, and receive 25% off your second purchase toward any other treatment.

Also for the month of December, we are offering a special on any of our 10 boutique colonics, normally $155, for the cost of our Classic Colonic: $115. If you have not already tried one of our specialty colonics with specific digestive (and whole body) effects, some not available anywhere else in the world, take advantage of our holiday special.

*INTENSIVE COLONIC*

(our most systemically effective colonic)

This is a colonic like none other, and La Casa is the only place in the entire world you can have it. We augment the colon cleansing with Pulsed Electric Magnetic Field therapy (PEMF). This is a painless enhancement of the cleansing process. In fact, it will feel quite wonderful. As you are expelling your discharge, we will send gentle pulsed magnetic energy into your abdomen from our PEMF machine, an FDA medically approved device. It’s a 1-2 punch: you get the benefits of the colonic with all the added benefits of the therapeutic effect from the PEMF (which are systemic).

*BIO-COLONIC*

(our most oxygenating colonic)

While you are having the benefit of your colon cleansing, you will be lying atop the Bio-Mat. Combining the healing effects of hefty emissions of both negative ions and far-infrared waves, your body will respond with enthusiasm. The Bio-Mat oxygenates the whole body as well as increasing circulation. It also alkalizes the body and strengthens the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells and killer T-cells. Most relevantly for the Bio-Colonic, the Bio-Mat dissolves hidden toxins, making them available for elimination through the cleansing action of the colon hydrotherapy.

*PURIFICATION COLONIC*

(our most immune-

enhancing colonic)

This colonic is performed with essential oils as well as a castor oil pack placed with a hot compress on the abdomen.  Don’t underestimate the power of the little castor bean, from which castor oil is extracted.Castor oilis an anti-toxin that impacts on the lymphatic system and enhances immunological function. The oil specifically strengthens the Peyer’s Patches, which are tiny patches of lymphatic tissue in the mucosal surface of the small intestine, and are an important element of the body’s immune system. Castor oil increases the number of T-11 cells with a concomitant increase in the number of total lymphocytes. This represents a general boost in the body’s specific defense status, since lymphocytes actively defend the health of the body by forming antibodies against pathogens and their toxins. Castor oil is both anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial (antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal), and there is also research indicating it kills cancer cells as well. The oil’s benefits can be derived by topical application (in fact, skin absorption is even more effective than swallowing it), and the application of heat augments the effect. When castor oil is absorbed through your skin, the lymphocyte count increase speeds up the removal of toxins from your tissues, which, in turn, promotes healing.

*FLOW COLONIC*

(our most soothing colonic)

This colonic uses the Japanese technology of Onnetsu. The healing power of Far-infrared energy is sent to strategic places on the abdomen. Differences in temperature can be discerned, and these differences detect the location of unhealthy areas deep within the body, guiding the therapist to concentrate on these areas. As well, the penetration of light (8-15 microns) and heat (130* F) emanating from the Onnetsu device delivers therapeutic efficacy by increasing the flow of fluid and energy systems in the body: blood, lymph and Chi.

*MARINE PLASMA COLONIC*

(our most electrolyte-replenishing colonic)

This colonic implants into the colon 24 vials of Quinton Sea Plasma. In 1897 Frenchman Rene Quinton discovered the remarkable healing ability of biologically active sea water from nutrient-rich plankton blooms. We call it “marine plasma” because the ratio of minerals and trace minerals of blood, comprising the biochemical and electrolytic composition of blood, is almost identical to sea water. Health benefits are extraordinary, as the treatment regulates our internal ocean (our tidal body), developed initially from amniotic fluid, and then translating into our blood, our lymphatic and extra-cellular fluids. And because the ocean has 20 billion genes, the marine plasma has the ability to inform our own genetic material and potential.

Stop by the Spa & Wellness Center soon to pick up your copy and find out which of our healing and nourishing therapies is right for you.

Jane and La Casa invite you to partake of the restorative and profoundly cleansing therapies that have brought La Casa world-wide recognition.

Sending Concern and Care to Our Family, Friends and Neighbors in Puerto Rico

So many in Puerto Rico have suffered. As many of you know, La Casa's first home was located in El Yunque, the rain forest of Puerto Rico. We, at La Casa Spa & Wellness New York, are holding thoughts and concerning care for all those throughout the Caribbean, who have suffered from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Many have been asking me for updates on what I know about the state of Puerto Rico, as well as how La Casa Spa & Wellness Puerto Rico has fared.

Renovating and re-opening La Casa Puerto Rico has been a passion of mine. The renovation was finally, two weeks before Irma hit, gorgeously and splendidly near-completetion -- after a year and a half of effort: building anew as well as rebuilding. La Casa PR looked radiant. We were a few months away from being ready for a soft opening, and had scheduled our first workshop, to which seven people had signed up.

In spite of the devastation wrought by Maria, we count ourselves among the lucky.

Here is what I know:

Even before Maria, the hardships were aplenty. While there was still food and water post-Irma/pre-Maria, for much of the island during that between-hurricanes/interim time, there was no way to cook food, and bedtimes were conveniently early. But everyone considered themselves fortunate for having dodged the Irma-bullet.

San Juan got electricity in some of the town last week. Most of the island, however, remains dark -- not since Maria, but since Irma. On day 49 after Maria, the banks are still allowing people to only withdraw $50 at a time. Lines for gas and at supermarkets have been as long as having to wait for 12 hours. The death total according to my sources there is 994.

Maria and I actually had a date with destiny on the same day. Maria and I, along with the 7 workshop attendees, were all supposed to arrive in PR on that fateful day of Sept 20th. Maria completed her journey. But all of us (and Delta Airlines) deferred to Maria’s greater majesty, cancelled the trip, and let Maria have her way. (It was the ONLY way -- to let her have her own way. she was not to be argued with.)

Jyl, La Casa PR's manager, Sequoia, Jyl's 3-month old infant, our two Wwoofers (volunteers), and dogs -- all survived the ordeal by passing the hurricane in an interior room. The remarkable, Jyl (who has supervised the entire renovation), was prescient with stored food and water. The day before Maria arrived, Jyl took every piece of fruit she could find on our trees, and brought them into the house. After Maria passed, and they had eaten all the fruit and stored food, they then dug up root veggies that Jyl had planted a few months before. Sequoia got not only her mom's milk, but also a delicious root vegetable porridge. The cisterns collecting rain water that we had constructed were in good working order, and gave both humans and dogs sufficient water to drink. All walked up to the near-by river, Espiritu Santos, every day to bathe. They did fine. Humans and animals are still on the farm, living comfortably without electricity, but with sufficient food and water, because of Jyl’s careful preparations.

Damage to the structures of La Casa came mostly in the form of roofs and porches blowing off, and water damage to everything that was under those roofs. Thirty years ago, shortly after I had bought the property, Hurricane Hugo came, took all the roofs, and caused massive damage. I rebuilt all the structures back then, and made them as hurricane proof as possible. We added extra shingles for protection, and created the ability to literally tie-down the roofs with cables. Before Maria came, we needed more tie-down cables, as we had expanded both the main house and the cottage and had additional roofing. But alas, others had the same idea; the hardware stores were all out of the materials we needed. The roofs that Maria took were exactly the roofs that did not have the tie-downs. Our bad fortune.

In spite of this major set-back, we are hopeful for a bright future for our center. But we need the support of our friends and family more than ever before. We need to repair the damage from Maria in order to resume the plan of continuing to offer our healing services.

If you are inclined to make donations to help PR rebuild, you might want to consider giving to La Casa. Your generous donations will be integral to our mission: to heal and contribute both to the community of Puerto Rico as well as for our guests who come to partake in our effective (and sometimes unique) healing therapies and natural life-style vacations.

During the past year of our extensive renovation period, we decided to open the small cottage to airbnb to derive a small income until we were ready to re-open La Casa. Airbnb guests LOVED the cottage, and the beautiful property. We have stellar reviews on Airbnb about the beauty and peacefulness of the experience of staying there, going to sleep to the melodies of the coquis (tiny tree frogs that have loud mouths), and waking up to the lyrical songs of the many local birds.

The expansion plan that we were about to embark upon was to create eight round dome-homes. These dome-homes will introduce to Puerto Rico two amazing, state-of-the-art building technologies for creating hurricane-proof structures: Aircrete and BioTekt. They are both energy efficient, storm, hurricane, and flood-proof; they make generous use of recycled materials, and are the most cost-efficient way of building possible on earth. 1000-feet of interior space with a hard shell outer layer can be constructed for a mere $4000.

Your generous donations to La Casa will target the following immediate needs of Maria-repair issues:

  • Repairing roofs on four buildings, with re-installation of tie-downs and multiple layers of shingles that will survive all future hurricanes.
  • Replacing a 30-foot yurt that had just been set up weeks before. (It took six men three days to put it up.)
  • We lost a third of our trees, and those that are left have no leaves. Because we are a working farm, we need to replant: avocadoes, mangoes (we have two of the largest mango trees in that part of the island), panapain (breadfruit), papaya (we had planted a whole orchard), haguas (a fruit specific to the Puerto Rican rain forest), passion fruit and gandules beans (both vines), and more.
  • We had created walk trails all through the property so that guests could enjoy a rain forest experience right after rolling out of bed. All the trails are now covered with fallen trees. We need to cut all the fallen trees and clear the paths.
  • Since the hurricane, our dogs have been going crazy. They wander off the farm, and disturb our neighbors. They didn’t do this before the hurricane. We need to build fencing around the property to keep the dogs in. Once we have the fencing, we can bring back. Terramoto (our donkey who was loaned out) as well as some goats (babies were born right after Maria on the farm above ours).
  • The water cisterns we had to capture rain water need some repairs, and we need more of them.

To assist in our plans for expansion:

  • We need to drill a well.
  • We need to invest in a few generators and multiple solar panels (as our goal is to be off the energy grid.)
  • We would welcome $ to continue with our plan for the unique dome-homes.
  • We would wlecome $ to build a yoga studio out of our gazebo, which no longer has a roof, nor windows.
  • When repaired, we are dedicated to the same purposes that both La Casas have stood for in the 30 years that we have been in operation:
  1. Offering therapeutic services to the local community
  2. Employing local residents for a variety of positions, and on-site job training
  3. Offering lectures with world renowned healers
  4. Offering free yoga classes to the communidty as well as to guests
  5. Offering targeted holistic medical therapies and consultations
  6. Serving as a world-class holistic center and destination eco-wellness resort.

I have written a detailed plan for the repair and expansion of La Casa Spa & Wellness Puerto Rico, and am happy to share it with anyone interested in learning more about the expansion plans, and/or the technology we are planning to use. Drop me an email if you want to see the PowerPoint presentation.

We look forward to reaffirming our dedication to give the gift of health and wellness to all those willing to receive it.

If you think it's not essential for the health

of the whole planet to rebuild PR,

read this and think again:

· The importance of the island Mona:

Besides the more well-known islands that are part of Puerto Rico—Viequez and Culebra—the island of Mona lies 41 miles west of the main island, and connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea. It is a protected nature preserve, and is a key shipping route from the Atlantic to the Panama Canal.

· The importance of the Puerto Rican Trench:

Puerto Rico is surrounded by deep waters, including the Puerto Rico Trench—the deepest trench in the Atlantic Ocean. This trench is called the Milwaukee Deep, and at its deepest spot is 26,247 feet. For comparison, the average depth of the Atlantic Ocean is 12,881 feet. Ocean trenches are unique habitats, home to a diverse number of species, many of which are new or still unknown to science. Studying the adaptations of deep-sea organisms to their surroundings can give scientists insight and information that may lead to biological and biomedical advances. Researchers have already discovered microbes in deep-sea hydrothermal vents that show promise for new sources of antibiotics as well as anti-cancer drugs.

Although our knowledge about the ocean trenches is limited, because of their depth and remoteness, we do know that they play a significant role in our lives on land. Seafloor earthquakes can come from these trenches, including the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake that caused the devastating tsunami. By studying ocean trenches, scientists can better understand the causes of the natural disasters that originate in the trenches.

Scientists are also finding significant information from the genetics of these deep-ocean-living organisms that will help us to understand the origins of ocean life, and the history of how life spread from the depths of the ocean to the rest of the world’s less deep oceans.

· The importance of the clay:

Puerto Rico is a now-extinct volcanic island-arc terrain that started to grow approximately 190 million years ago. The red clay on the island is ancient volcanic mud, high in minerals and iron, and is useful in treating a variety of conditions. Pelotherapy, the use of clay for therapeutic benefits, is a popular practice at spas and wellness centers worldwide. Clay has many nutrients and minerals that are helpful in getting rid of toxins, heavy metals, impurities and chemicals from the body. Many animals eat clay to help remove poisons from their systems during illness. The clay’s neutral pH levels as well as its high content of phosphorous and magnesium makes it an ideal and popular anti-aging material. It allows skin to heal, and maintains a fresh, natural glow. Native Americans called clay Ee-Wah-Kee, the mud that heals.

When we at La Casa want clay, we simply go to the near-by river and collect it. The Espiratu Santo river is known to be one of the cleanest on earth. We have used this clay successfully for skin conditions, digestive ailments, inflammation, fever, and immune disorders. We have found it to be one of the most effective therapies we have offered.

· The importance of Rio Camuy:

Río Camuy (about a 2 hour drive from La Casa) is part of the third largest subterranean river and cave system in the world. It is home to more than 13 species of bats, and hundreds of other insect, arachnid and frog species.

· The importance of the diversity of the island:

Puerto Rico is an exceptionally diverse region, with a mountain range, coastal plains, a desert and a rainforest. With more plants, trees and animals, the soils improve and become stronger—less prone to erosion, drought and flooding. Biodiversity is of great importance in order to maintain stable ecosystems.

· The importance of the rain forest:

La Casa is situated at the edge of the El Yunque Rainforest, which is part of the U.S. National Forest System. It is the only rainforest that is protected in the U.S. The rainforest is one of the most diverse areas within the U.S.

Weather conditions in El Yunque are perfect for many types of plants and trees to thrive. There are thousands of native plants and trees, including at least 240 species of trees (with 23 known to exist only in this forest), 150 species of fern, 50 species of orchids and many species of vines and mosses.

No large animals reside in the rainforest, but countless small animals do. These include 50 species of birds (including the endangered Puerto Rican parrot), 11 species of bats, eight species of lizards and 13 species of the coquí frog, the national mascot.

There are also many types of snakes, insects and rodents.

· The importance of the International Biosphere Reserve:

The driest place on the island is a desert-like forest known as Guanica Biosphere Reserve and State Forest, located in the southwest region. The Cordillera Central mountain range blocks most of the rain systems in a phenomenon known as a rain shadow. The nearly 10,000-acre forest has been protected since 1919 and was declared a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve in 1981.

There are at least 700 species of plants in the Guanica Reserve, including 48 endangered plants and 16 that are endemic to the region, including the gumbo limbo tree and the guayacán tree. The largest variety of birds on the island, at least 185 species, lives in the reserve. That includes most of the 16 species native to Puerto Rico, such as the Puerto Rican woodpecker and the endangered Puerto Rican nightjar. There are also countless reptiles and amphibians within the reserve, including the national coquí frog.

· The importance of the Puerto Rican culture:

Puerto Rican culture is based on a blend of Taino (Indian), African and Spanish traditions, food, music, art and language. There are also influences introduced by immigrants from China, Italy, France, Germany and Cuba.

Cocina Criolla, the local name for Puerto Rican cuisine, has its roots in Taino, Spanish and African specialties and cooking styles with influences from European and Chinese immigrants. The Taino people lived primarily on tropical fruit, corn, yuca and seafood. The Spanish introduced many types of food, including rice, wheat, olives and olive oil, beef, pork, garlic, sugarcane and coffee. Enslaved Africans brought okra, taro and plantains. Sugarcane was and still is used to distill rum, a favorite drink in Puerto Rico. Today's cuisine, with a liberal use of indigenous ingredients focuses on many of the same ingredients that have been used for centuries.

Several instruments that are traditionally used in Puerto Rican music date back to the Taino people. The güiro is one of the intruments. Several others, including the requinto, bordonua, cuatro and tiple, were adapted from the six-string guitar brought over by early Spanish settlers. Percussion instruments such as panderetas and maracas have been popular. Dances choreographed to match the music include the bomba, plena and variations of the salsa.

Puerto Rican art also shows a blend of the many cultures in the island's melting pot. Taino art included jewelry, pottery and baskets made from gold, shells, wood and stones. The earliest religious carvings were called "cemi." These were highly revered small statues that stood within all the villages. Religious figures dated back to the 16th century were known as Santos. Masks also date back to earlier centuries, and are still popular during carnival time.

· The importance of the Puerto Rican science:

The second largest radio telescope in the world is located in Arecibo.

· The importance of the Puerto Rican monkeys:

Cayo Santiago Field Station is a 38-acre tropical island off the coast of Puerto Rico and home to approximately 1,500 rhesus monkeys, earning it the local nickname "Monkey Island."

The Cayo Santiago Field Station is the longest-running primate field site in the world. Since it was founded in 1938, generations of monkeys have lived out their lives, with humans keeping a watchful eye. Only monkeys live on the island. The staff takes a 15-minute boat trip from Punta Santiago to Monkey Island.

Over the past 80 years, important and diverse research has taken place on Cayo. While some scientists have studied cognition, analyzing how the monkeys think and solve problems, others have studied where the monkeys are looking. Researchers have asked such questions as: can the monkeys reflect on their own knowledge to know when they don't know something – a hallmark of human reasoning? (The answer is surprisingly, yes! Monkeys can think about what they are thinking about.)

Scientists have observed the monkeys' interactions to learn who is friends with whom, who gets into fights, who has suitors for affection. Because of this research, we know everything about their family life.

Yet another research project has been to study how hormone levels affect monkeys’ sexual development. This translates into a lot of time scooping up monkey poo.

Working on Monkey Island is nothing if not humbling. While the monkeys are free to wander all over the island without restriction (after all it is their home), the scientists, on the other hand, eat their lunch in a large metal cage. Researcher Giselle Carabello-Cruz suggests that we think of the island as like a zoo where the monkeys come to see the humans.

Researchers are now at the point where they are asking questions in the fields of biology, anthropology and psychology that can't be answered anywhere else.

After Hurricane Maria struck, scientists in the U.S. attempted to make contact with students and staff in Puerto Rico who had worked at Cayo Santiago Field Station. Photos and videos sent back showed absolute devastation of the island. A photo taken from a helicopter surveying the damage showed a large chalk message: "S.O.S. Necesitamos Agua/Comida" – We need water and food.

Yet, in spite of all: the monkeys were spotted! Defying expectations, many of the Cayo monkeys had survived the storm. Over the next several days, staff traveled to Cayo and started searching for each individual monkey.

Researchers from around the world started organizing relief efforts. The most immediate concern was water: a system of rainwater cisterns had collected fresh water for the monkey’s to drink.

We have to thank the researchers, and send blessings to the amazing monkeys who have and will continue to teach us so much about our animal ancestry.

We at La Casa have been investigating hydrogen for many years. We are convinced that H2 will be the next big thing in effective holistic therapies. (Actually it already IS the next big thing, but the world hasn’t found out about that yet.)

The research has been done, and is compelling—for over 150 conditions that H2 improves.

Mark Sircus has written extensively on the subject of the therapeutic value of H2, and is coming out shortly with a new book on the subject. La Casa’s last Musings was, similarly, on H2, and we have posted the video of our Hydrogen Summit, held recently at La Casa with Hal Blatman, M.D. and Sarah Adams, of Vital Reaction.

In our support of the belief that the world’s whole population is better off with a greater daily supply of pure H2 than present environmental circumstances allow, La Casa has arranged for you to purchase V-R H2 tablets with a 10% discount, using the code above.

Jane's latest book is out now through Free Association Books, and available through AMAZON!

Great reviews are still rolling in, like this one:

"This book is more than just a book. The passion of the author's love for both her mother and her daughter create a vivid life for the readers imagination to fully immerse into. The delicate use of each word powerfully expels the reader out of their body and into the lives that this book is based on. Along with a powerful story line the author cleverly inserts an abundance of knowledge throughout the book. It created new pathways and perspectives in the mind and fully allows the reader to come full circle with the essence of motherhood, childhood and the simplicity of a human being.
This book is mindful, emotional and spiritual, all three elements come together for the reader to experience the wholeness of Jane Goldberg's genius mind."

Jane and Jay Gutierrez's acclaimed book about the healing power of radioactive is still available to purchase on Amazon.

"The authors present a very compelling, research based, explanation on how low level radiation is beneficial to our health. There are many stories of people with chronic, disabling diseases who found Jay Gutierrez and his Night Hawk Minerals program and by following the protocols given by Jay used his radioactive stones to achieve true healing. I am now a user of the stones and a true believer in their value. I HIGHLY recommend this book!"

Jane and La Casa invite you to partake of the restorative and profoundly cleansing therapies that have brought La Casa world-wide recognition.
